Here, you’ll uncover the stories of the city’s most famous chocolate-making families - Rowntree, Terry, Tuke and Craven, and learn how they transformed ch

Along the way, discover surprising secrets and fascinating facts about York’s greatest creations, from the Chocolate Orange to the world-famous KitKat. Did you know this year marks the centenary of Terry’s Dessert Chocolate Apple - the forerunner to the iconic Chocolate Orange we all know and love today?

Launched in York in 1926, it was a pioneering creation that proved to be the springboard behind the Chocolate Orange but, unlike its little brother, the original wasn’t apple flavoured. Instead, it was made from plain chocolate, shaped like an apple and divided into segments, designed as a luxurious centrepiece to share with family and guests.

Although the Chocolate Apple disappeared from production in 1954, its place in York’s history remains fascinating - and now we’re bringing this forgotten creation back into the spotlight.

🍫 Discover our giant Chocolate Apple display in our shop and celebrate 100 years of this little-known piece of chocolate history.

🍏 We’ve also created just 500 limited-edition apple-flavoured chocolate bars, inspired by what the original might have tasted like if it had been apple flavoured. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
