I’d been debating whether to give the article written by Kathleen Stock the airtime it doesn’t deserve.

But as I sat with it, I just couldn’t stay silent.

This isn’t just another opinion piece.

It questions whether mobility aids have become too “hot”. It refers to mobility aids as “props”. It suggests that needing different aids for different days is something to be suspicious of. And most concerning of all, it encourages people to challenge others and even tell them to throw away their so-called “props”.

That isn’t harmless.

It fuels the harmful idea that disabled people should have to prove they’re “disabled enough” before they’re believed. It reinforces the stigma that so many in our community face every single day, and it risks making people think it’s acceptable to question or confront strangers about their disability.

Young disabled people already delay using mobility aids because they’re afraid of being judged. Articles like this only reinforce that fear.

To anyone who has read this article and felt hurt, anxious or afraid just know we stand with you.

You do not owe anyone an explanation.
You do not owe anyone your medical history.
And you certainly do not owe anyone proof of why you are using a mobility aid.

We promise to continue to challenge these harmful stereotypes, stand up for our community and fight for a world where disabled people are believed the first time. 💙💙💙
