That's us out of here for 2025, we'll see you on the other side.

Time to spend some quality time indoors with the family, maybe even have a glass of beer.

Merry Christmas xx

You don't see many of these out in the wild - a completely stock original 1959 Futurama.

Imported into the UK through Selmer (via Hofner), they arrived on our shores before the US built Stratocasters they were modelled on. Built in Czechoslovakia, this became the first electric guitar that George Harrison played in the Beatles and was a core staple of their Hamburg residencies.

On an interesting side note, in 1964 a magazine ran a competition where you could win George's actual Futurama. Upon being chosen, the winner exclaimed that he couldn't actually play guitar, so it would be wasted on him. He accepted a cash prize instead and the magazine editor kept George's guitar.

It sold at auction last year for $1.27 million.

Not entirely sure, but think the bridge might be lifting a bit. Best get a feeler gauge in there just to check 👌

Pre 2006 Maton guitars (this one is a late 60's) came with a unique square end truss rod nut. For some unknown reason, this required having a tool specific to Maton that went through the strap button in the end block and travelled the full length of the guitar body just to adjust the truss rod. This made little sense, and they've since changed to accommodate a more common type of Allen wrench.

This one came in with glue failure on the fretboard, which means removing it entirely. Doing so however allows you to see the strange little nut and the handy workaround that's been discovered for adjusting it. Specifically, the square end of a 5mm socket (the bit that usually attaches to the wrench) fits exactly over the Maton nut - the 5mm end then fits over a Martin truss rod tool and voilà! A handy workaround to make adjustments, with the added bonus of being able to see what you're doing!*

*Please don't remove your fretboards to adjust your truss rods. Also, we thankfully managed to get through most of this post without using the phrase 'massive tool'. You're welcome 👍

A neglected area of electric guitar tone is the quality of your components and wiring. There was technically nothing wrong with the stock parts in this Epiphone Les Paul, they are the standard far East Alpha parts you'll find in millions of guitars, but the quality and the way it's wired don't do you any favours.

Here we've upgraded all the components to USA made CTS and Switchcraft parts and wired it to match the 50's Gibson specs - the paper-in-oil capacitors connect in a different way, allowing more treble to remain in the volume when rolling down. We've also changed the pot tapers to make the adjustments more subtle and less on/off as before.

Small changes in theory, but something that can customise your tone in ways just swapping out pickups can't do.

HI! We're peeping our heads over the parapet of structural repairs to ask those who've had work done by us if you could spare a few minutes to leave us a Google review? Hopefully a positive one, so we can add stars to our jumper just like in Maccy D's. Do they still do that?

Help us achieve our starry destiny ###

Apologies to all who've been tagged in some random bu****it on this page - don't click on anything as we've not gone into the cheap T-shirt business, but have instead been hacked by some scummy bot.

Security increased, as you were 👍

Some lovely feedback from James here ❤️ Have you got a well loved instrument that has seen better days?

Don't live with the guilt of having it sitting in your house like a massive sad elephant, trying to avoid looking at it for fear of dagger like shards of shame piercing your heart. Get it booked in with us and we'll give everyone the Christmas they've always wanted. We're jolly like that, see. 🐘

''For three years my old Antoria 335 Gibson copy had sat propped in the corner of my office. The pick-ups didn't work, the controls didn't work, and the jack socket sounded like a V1 buzz bomb every time I plugged it in. I gigged with this guitar for 40+ years and in a fit of nostalgia, thought it deserved better than what it was getting. So, I left it with Chris at Wintaura and picked it up a couple of weeks later - and it was like a brand new instrument... New pick-ups, new control k***s, new jack socket. Plays like a dream now that I've got it back home so a BIG WELL DONE to Wintaura for this excellent professional service.

James Christie (worked as JC Christie in my musician days.)''

Refrets.

We've had a few.

But then again....

All fretwork at Wintaura Guitar Works is carried out with the instrument installed on the Erlewine Neck Jig. This device allows you to simulate string tension on the neck without actually having the strings on, meaning super accurate levelling.

The starting measurements are taken with the guitar tipped into the playing position - there's actually advice in the instruction manual to take into account the owner's physique. The jig can compensate regardless of whether you're built like Sid Vicious or that big Hawaiian fella that played the ukulele, so no need to worry about that one extra mince pie in the coming few weeks 👌

Wintaura Mega News #1

What a crazy month! A few of you already know, but for those who don't, Wintaura Guitar Works has moved!

That little garage was our home for nearly twelve years and saw a lot of visitors in its time. But the advantages of home working (pretty short commute) were no longer able to compete with the fact that we had just run out of space. Guitars bred guitars and they slowly started taking over the whole house, to the point where you had to move racks of them out the way if you wanted to get into the freezer. Not ideal.

So, we've packed up all our benches, tools, jigs, and boxes of related paraphernalia and installed them half a mile up the road on the first floor of the South Bank Social Club. The new space will be a bit of a work in progress for a few weeks while some minor building/cosmetic work goes on and we get ourselves settled into a new way of working, but we are at least back open for business and ready to take work in again.

The new space is bigger. It has actual windows letting in daylight and even more incredibly, central heating. We're sharing the first floor now with other independent businesses and makers, including Young Thugs Studios and Sounen Audio Repairs. Having more time and space leads us on nicely to Wintaura Mega News #2, but more on this later this week!

In the meantime, get in touch and come see us in our new setting! Our hours are now slightly different, but all details of when and where we can be found are here - www.wintaura.com/contact

How excited are we? Even more excited than Ripley watching the washing machine ❤️
