This was supposed to be a bowl of salad leaves but nettles took over. There are now at least five Red Admiral caterpillars hidden in the nettle leaves - a sunny spot and fresh leaves are irresistible. I noticed an Ichneumon wasp (not identified yet) taking an interest too. You can just see the caterpillar in that shot through the rolled-up leaf.

Lots of mining bees around today as the weather warmed up a bit. These Andrena fulva (Tawny Mining Bee) were out in force - the most I've seen at one time in the Wild House garden. Our consistent wildlife focussed gardening is paying dividends.

A healthy amount of frog spawn arrived in the Wildhouse pond a few days ago - always good to see the cycle continuing. Don't forget the birds are checking nesting sites so get your new nest box up asap and give the old ones a clean out.

A new study shows pollution affects trees in an unforeseen and potentially catastrophic way. It seems our disrespect for the environment will find untold ways to come back and bite us, this time under the radar via fungi. The sense of urgency increases!

Pollution is changing the fungi that provide mineral nutrients to tree roots, which could explain malnutrition trends in Europe's trees.

People across Britain are encouraged by the British Trust for Ornithology to put up a nest box and provide a family home for our birds.
