For the safety of our staff, it is extremely important to check that your load does not contain batteries...
..but how do you know if your waste item contains a battery? 🔋

If you ticked off one or more of the below criteria, your item probably contains a battery

PLEASE KEEP BATTERIES SEPARATE and safely dispose of them:

We receive a lot of questions regarding the availability of battery disposal points in supermarkets and shops

Unfortunately, Island Waste do not have a contract for public battery bins and are therefore not owned or controlled by us

🔋If you cannot find a battery bin at your local shop, you can safely dispose of your batteries at The States of Guernsey Waste & Recycling Centre, Longue Hougue

🔋Alternatively, you can request a battery bin for your office or workplace from our sister company Galaxy CI by contacting them on 01481 242412 or [email protected]

🔋Commercial customers wanting to dispose of batteries or items containing batteries should contact Island Waste on 01481 235300 or [email protected]

Despite our regular awareness campaigns, batteries are still being disposed of in general/mixed waste and recycling.

Every battery that ends up in the wrong bin can rapidly ignite and can cause very serious fires.

A few seconds to dispose of a battery correctly can help prevent a fire that could have devastating consequences.

The video shows a BATTERY FIRE that suddenly ignited at our processing site yesterday.

Despite our regular awareness campaigns, batteries are still being disposed of in general/mixed waste and recycling.

Cheshire Fire & Rescue recently shared these images from a fire in Widnes most likely caused by a damaged lithium-ion battery from a disposable v**e that had been placed in general waste or recycling

But fires like this are preventable by keeping batteries out of waste!
