*STRESS IN POULTRY – PREVENTING AND MANAGING STRESS FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE (Pt. 3)*

*Why Prevention is Better Than Treatment*

The best way to deal with stress is to prevent it before it affects your flock. Once birds become severely stressed, their immunity drops, feed conversion worsens, egg production declines, and disease outbreaks become more likely. Preventing stress is therefore one of the most profitable investments a poultry farmer can make.

*Provide a Comfortable Environment*

A comfortable poultry house is the first defence against stress. Ensure adequate ventilation to remove excess heat, moisture, dust, and harmful gases such as ammonia. Avoid overcrowding by maintaining the recommended stocking density, and; keep litter dry and clean to reduce discomfort and disease pressure.

*Maintain Consistent Feeding and Watering*

Birds thrive on routine. Feed them at the same times each day and avoid sudden changes in feed type or feeding schedule. Always provide clean, cool drinking water because even a few hours without water+ can cause significant stress, especially during hot weather.

*Handle Birds Gently*

Rough handling during vaccination, weighing, catching, or transportation causes unnecessary stress and may even result in injuries. Move birds calmly and quietly, and avoid loud noises or sudden disturbances around the poultry house.

*Support Birds During Stressful Periods*

Certain situations such as vaccination,± transportation, extreme weather, and; disease challenges cannot always be avoided. During these periods, farmers can minimise the effects of stress by *ensuring birds remain well hydrated and, where appropriate, providing vitamins or electrolytes based on veterinary advice.*(

*Observe Your Flock Every Day*

Spend time watching your birds. Healthy birds are active, alert, feeding normally, and evenly distributed throughout the house. Early detection of unusual behaviour allows problems to be corrected before they become costly.

Key Takeaway

*Stress may not always be visible, but! its effects are. Good management practices that reduce stress will improve bird welfare, strengthen immunity, increase egg production and growth, reduce mortality, and maximise farm profits. A low-stress flock is a productive flock.*
