🚨🚨☘️"The Ghana Health Service is watching. Everyone is watching."
These were the words of Professor Isaac Ayensu, former Head of KNUST's Herbal Medicine Department, as he addressed newly inducted medical herbalists at yesterday's 7th Induction Ceremony in Accra.

Charging them to uphold the oath of prescribing only natural plant-based medicines – never mixing with orthodox drugs or pure chemicals – Prof. Ayensu reminded the fresh cohort that they are now professionals, trained scientifically, and accountable not just to their conscience, but specifically to the Ghana Health Service – and to all Ghanaians.

The event, themed "Advancing Primary Healthcare Through Research-Driven Herbal Medicine Integration," marked another milestone for traditional medicine in Ghana's primary healthcare system.

From Kaneshie to Kejetia, from trotro stations to office junctions, the ritual is the same: steaming rice, hot banku, spicy sh*to, all neatly tied in polythene bags. We call it “rubber”. Vendors love it — GH₵0.05, light, ties tight. Buyers accept it — food stays hot.

But what if that GH₵0.05 “rubber” is the most expensive thing on your plate? When heat meets plastic, chemistry happens. One plate of hot rice in a rubber will not send you to the Emergency. But eat it twice daily for 20 years, and you’ve built a chemical load.

The next time steam rises from your banku, ask the vendor one question: “Mama, do you have a leaf or foil?” If millions of Ghanaians ask that question daily, Ghana will change within months — for our bodies, our drains, and the Ghana our children will inherit.

Medical practitioner Maxwell Antwi has cautioned men against ignoring changes in their urine and general health, noting that prostate cancer often develops silently and may only become noticeable when it has reached an advanced stage.

He urged men, especially those aged 40 and above, to undergo regular medical screening and to seek prompt medical attention whenever they experience any of these symptoms.

In many communities, people living with epilepsy have been isolated, ridiculed, and wrongly labeled as victims of curses or evil spirits.

Yet in the quiet village of Akwadum near Koforidua, Ghana, one traditional herbal practitioner is attracting attention with a bold claim, “that his herbal treatments have helped people suffering from epilepsy regain control of their lives without surgery.”

His name is Opanin Kofi Budu.
Advocates of traditional medicine believe collaboration between researchers, universities, medical institutions, and practitioners like Opanin Kofi Budu could unlock important discoveries that benefit patients worldwide.

The research published in Nutrients shows the effects of caffeine do not always manifest as shorter sleep or difficulty falling asleep. Much more often, the changes concern the quality of nighttime rest.
"Caffeine may shorten sleep or make it more difficult to fall asleep. However, even when sleep duration appears normal, it may reduce slow-wave activity and shift the EEG pattern toward a more wakeful brain," Kurpas said.
This means the body may spend eight hours in bed, but the brain may fail to fully regenerate. People are often unaware of this.

Researchers at North-West University (NWU) are studying the anti-cancer properties of Lessertia frutescens, commonly known as "cancer bush", as preliminary lab results unveil its potential against various cancer types, including the notoriously hard-to-treat small-cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer.

Prof. Chrisna Gouws, a research professor in the Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences, leads the team exploring this promising avenue. "Lessertia frutescens has shown significant anticancer activity against several different cancer types in our research," she said,

The Accra High Court has dismissed an application by the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) seeking to strike out a lawsuit filed by the Ghana Alternative Medical Practitioners Association (GAMPA).

In its ruling, the Court held that GAMPA’s claims raise serious legal issues that deserve full trial and determination.

GAMPA had argued in its suit that Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practices do not fall under the jurisdiction of TMPC. The association further pleaded that TMPC’s assumption of regulatory authority over CAM practitioners is ultra vires, unlawful, null and void.
