I spent an hour at the bank with my dad as he needed to transfer some money. Curious, I asked him, "Dad, why don't we set up your internet banking?"
"Why would I do that?" he asked.
"Well, then you wouldn't have to spend an hour here for simple transactions. You could even do your shopping online. It would make everything so much easier!" I was eager to introduce him to the convenience of online banking.
He responded, "If I do that, I wouldn't have to leave the house?"
"Exactly!" I said, excitedly explaining how even groceries can be delivered to the door and how Amazon has everything one might need.
His reply caught me off guard. He said, "Since I walked into this bank today, I've met four friends and had a nice chat with the staff, who all know me well by now. You know I'm alone most of the time, and this is the social interaction I enjoy. I like getting ready and coming to the bank. I have plenty of time, and I crave the human touch.
Two years ago, when I was sick, the fruit vendor I buy from came to visit me, sat by my bedside, and even shed a tear. When your mom fell on her morning walk a few days ago, the local grocer saw her, and immediately drove her home because he knows us. Would I get that kind of human connection if everything were online?
Why would I want everything delivered to my door and only interact with a screen? I like to know the people I deal with, not just see them as sellers. It creates bonds and relationships. Can Amazon deliver all of that?"
His words reminded me that technology isn't a replacement for real-life connections. It's important to spend time with people, not just with devices.
