🐴 «I can fit two fingers under the noseband so it’s fine.»

If only it were that simple.

Tightness is the test everyone learned. Placement is the one not enough people check. And a noseband can ace the two-finger rule while still sitting exactly on top of a nerve.

Here’s the part that gets skipped: a horse’s face isn’t a flat surface you strap leather onto. There’s bone, soft tissue, and nerves just under the skin some of them running right where a low cavesson or a flash tends to land. Drop that noseband too far down and you’re not just adding pressure, you’re adding it in the wrong place.

What looks like «attitude» chomping, head tossing, leaning on the hand, refusing to soften is often just a horse telling you the fit is off. Not a training issue. A tack issue.

Anatomical bridles genuinely help here the shaping distributes pressure better by design. But a good design fitted badly is still a badly fitted bridle. The check still has to happen.

Two fingers is step one, not the whole checklist. 🌿

Let’s clear up one of the oldest myths in the barn: protein does not make horses hot. 🔥

Protein is made of amino acids, and those amino acids are used to build and repair tissue. They support muscle repair, topline, hoof growth, coat quality, and normal immune function.

If a horse is getting more protein than they need, the excess nitrogen has to be processed and excreted. That is one reason overfeeding protein can contribute to stronger ammonia smells in the stall. But it does not turn into explosive energy.

If your horse feels sharp, reactive, or spooky after meals, look at the feed’s NSC (Non-Structural Carbohydrates) content, especially sugars and starches. High-NSC meals can create a faster glucose and insulin response, and some horses are more sensitive to that than others.

The goal is not just “more protein.” The goal is better-quality protein with the right amino acid profile. Crude protein tells you the total amount, but amino acids like lysine, methionine, and threonine tell you more about how useful that protein is.

Want to support topline without the sugar rush? Look for a balanced feed built around quality protein with low NSC content 🐴

If your horse drinks after a hard workout, that’s a good sign. But it doesn’t always mean recovery is complete. 🐴💧

Horse sweat is different from human sweat. It contains a high concentration of electrolytes, especially sodium, chloride, and potassium. During heavy sweating, horses lose both water and minerals that are essential for fluid balance, muscle function, nerve signaling, and recovery.

That matters because thirst is not driven by water loss alone. Blood volume, blood pressure, sodium concentration, hormones, and gut signals all help regulate drinking. After exercise, your horse may drink because fluid volume has dropped, but the osmotic thirst signal can be weaker when electrolytes have been lost along with water.

So while plain water is essential, it may not fully replace what was lost during a heavy sweat session. A salt block or basic daily salt intake may help with maintenance needs, but acute sweat losses from hard work, heat, humidity, travel, or competition often require a more targeted approach.

A balanced equine electrolyte can help replace the minerals lost in sweat and support better fluid retention, hydration, and post-workout recovery.

Best practice⭐️:
Offer clean fresh water first and always keep plain water available. Use electrolytes according to workload, sweat loss, weather, and label directions. If your horse is lethargic, not drinking, colicky, weak, overheated, or not recovering normally, call your vet.

Support smarter recovery after every serious sweat

Another great week at Ippos Club 🇬🇷 for the EquiSport team! 🐎

Helen Schut and Oakley CH jumped clear and fast to secure 5th place in the CSI1* 1.30m, while kept the momentum going with another excellent clear round aboard Pellegrino v/h Edelweishof in the CSIO3*-W 1.35m.

The riders were looking sharp in our favorite KEP Italia Official helmets and Horse Pilot gear, while the horses were feeling their best on their Cavalor nutrition program. ✨

As always, thank you to Photobit.net for the amazing footage!
