Revealing Volos' Industrial Memory Through Light

Opposite the historic railway station of Volos, a new City Hotel rises in one of the city's most significant industrial districts — where brick factories, warehouses and railway infrastructure shaped the city's identity for over a century.

As the district is gradually regenerated, contemporary architecture enters into a dialogue with that industrial heritage. The lighting concept was built around that relationship.

Rather than continuous LED strips, we used a compact optical luminaire that casts a delicate halo of warm light around each recessed opening. The light follows the architectural geometry, revealing its depth, rhythm and symmetry while keeping the façade quiet.

The aim was restraint — to express the values that define the architecture itself: rhythm, hierarchy, repetition, materiality.

From the first simulation, to the on-site mock-up, to the completed façade, every decision served one purpose: to let the architecture speak after sunset.

As Volos rediscovers its industrial identity, we're glad architectural lighting can be part of that transformation — revealing the history that's already there, with respect.

Light as Field:
Rethinking Illumination in Contemporary Architecture

In contemporary architectural practice, lighting is often approached as a technical necessity — a system that ensures visibility, highlights form and supports function.

Yet, as architectural spaces become increasingly experiential, adaptive and human-centred, this understanding of light proves insufficient.

Quantum aesthetics introduces a different way of thinking about lighting design.
Not as a stylistic trend, nor as a scientific application of physics, but as a conceptual and perceptual framework — one that repositions light as a dynamic field shaping spatial experience.

Light, Time & Preservation in W**e Environments

In w**e environments, lighting does more than enhance what we see.

It becomes a critical parameter of preservation.
W**e is a photosensitive material.

Exposure to light—particularly the blue end of the spectrum—can compromise its chemical stability and long-term quality.

Which raises a fundamental question:

Can lighting be designed not only to reveal a space, but also to protect what it holds?

We examine a spectral approach to architectural lighting, where low blue-light emission (≈2000–2200K) and controlled luminous fields shape both perception and preservation.

Lighting is no longer static.

It becomes temporal, adaptive, and intentional.

Through differentiated lighting scenarios, the space shifts across the day—supporting tasting, storytelling, and the slow experience of w**e.

Here, light acts as a mediator between environment, material, and human perception.

Not merely illuminating.

But preserving, guiding, and framing time itself.

From Memory to Presence

3 years ago, we illuminated the ruins of the former Anemogiannis Factory in Loggos, Paxos.

At the time, the site was still a construction zone.
Walls were incomplete.
Openings were empty.
The future remained uncertain.

The temporary lighting intervention was not intended as a spectacle.
It was a gesture of respect towards the village, its residents and the industrial heritage of the site.

Light revealed traces of memory.

Today, the same architecture has entered a different state.

The objective is no longer to reveal memory, but to support presence.

Privacy.
Comfort.
Orientation.
Atmosphere.

What fascinates us most is that the architecture itself has changed less than the relationships around it.

The same walls now host different experiences.

The same waterfront receives different forms of life.

The same light serves a different purpose.

From a Quantum Aesthetics perspective, architecture is not defined by its physical form alone.

It emerges through the dynamic relationship between place, light, time and observer.

What was once a field of memory has gradually become a field of hospitality.

Perhaps this is the deeper role of architectural lighting:

not to illuminate objects,

but to support the transformation of experience.
