It is not just a ponderance on the adage ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ but a real initi
ative to sensitize the public about what beautiful creations can come from stuff we use every day and consider trash while reducing our garbage build-up in Georgetown. Since the start of Everything makes Craft, there has been a tremendous surge in businesses that include aspects of upcycling into their businesses as they see the value and importance of upcycling in our society. I'm a young mother of two, an aunt of thirteen and the sixth among eight siblings, and i try to give new purpose or new life to everything i get my hands on rather than let it go to waste. Crafty from a young age, i always felt the need not to throw out materials that were still good or at least parts of it could be somehow re-used. Now that I have a family of my own and I see the amount of garbage we accumulate, I decided to put aside those things that someday I’ll have uses for, like cereal boxes, macaroni and cheese boxes, aluminum tin cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars of all shapes, sizes and colours. Very family oriented, coming from a big family background, i think of my craft as another way to engage the family, my children, friends and relatives. But even more noteworthy, is the altruistic nature as my new business venture which was initially an advocacy campaign. The Up-cycling venture [Everything makes Craft] was not meant to be commercial but rather to show the public what can be done with what is considered ‘trash’, to promote an anti-littering environment especially at home where you can reuse things instead of throwing them out and adding to the garbage build up in Georgetown. What began as a hobby soon became a business venture as people started responding to my craft and requesting pieces. The positive feedback and encouragement from friends and family then took me to the next level. From elegant picture frames to trendy lanterns, glass bottle figurines to wall hangings, everything truly makes craft from glass bottles, buttons and cans to newspaper, pieces of cloth and plastic. When describing my craft - transforming the old into the new to use anywhere, anytime and for any event, “Up-cycling is a simple and inexpensive way to do things with the family, spending quality time while making little gifts and impacting the future generation”. Everything makes Craft also offers classes for ‘Crafty moms’ or moms who wish they were crafty, or claim ‘I can never do that, I’m not artistic’.
