Artist's note #2｜
We have long been thinking on the definition of contemporary craft and its potential. Through in-depth exchanges with creators working across different craft disciplines, we have come to realize that contemporary craft has long transcended the boundaries of a single medium or traditional material. Just as contemporary ceramic practice is no longer confined to clay, glaze, or conventional firing techniques.
In the past, we experimented with incorporating techniques from other craft disciplines, including lacquer, bamboo weaving, metalwork, and woodworking, into our ceramic works. It was not until we met the Hong Kong-based craft artist On Ka Chun, who is dedicated to the traditional craft of Liangran (gambier) dyeing, that we had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of this centuries-old textile tradition. The naturally derived colors and textures of Liangran (gambier) dyeing textiles resonated strongly with the visual and spiritual qualities of pure earth, inspiring us to explore the fusion of two distinct mediums: ceramics and Liangran (gambier) dyeing.
Over several years, we conducted repeated experiments with different types of clay and dyes, exploring their compatibility, surface textures, and color-fixing techniques. Through this process, we were able to develop a relatively stable cross-media method. The craft vocabulary that has emerged through the interplay of these two materials continues to broaden our creative perspective. Moving forward, we will continue to explore how these two traditional crafts can be transformed and reinterpreted within a contemporary context.
我們一直思考當代工藝的定義與其潛在的敘事可能性。隨著與不同工藝媒介創作者的深度交流，我們體現到當代工藝早已跨越單一媒介或傳統媒材的範疇；正如當代陶藝的實踐，亦不再受限於陶泥、釉藥與單純的燒製方式。
過去，我們曾嘗試將漆藝、竹編、金工及木藝等跨工藝融入陶藝作品之中。直至認識了在香港致力於傳統「莨染」的工藝家安加俊，才得以一窺這門歷史悠久的染織技藝。莨染織物那份源於自然的色澤與質感，其本質與純粹的泥土產生了強烈的視覺與精神共鳴，遂引發我們對於「陶瓷」與「莨染」異質融合的探索。
歷經數年針對不同陶土與染料融合度、表面肌理表現及固色技術的反覆試驗，我們成功找出相對穩定的跨媒介配方。在這媒介實驗中，兩者交織出的工藝語彙不斷拓寬我們的創作視野，未來我們將持續探索這兩項傳統工藝在當代語境下的轉化與實踐空間。
