Few garments embody elegance and history like the violet wool maternity coat worn by on the night of her husband’s election to the Presidency in November 1960. Featured on the cover of Life magazine, it symbolizes the dawn of a new political era and the rise of a 20th-century style icon.

At the time, Jacqueline was eight months pregnant with John F. Kennedy Jr., and her public appearances during the campaign were limited. However, she joined Senator Kennedy in Hyannis Port election night wearing this striking coat. Its vivid violet hue contrasted with the neutral tones typical of political wardrobes, exuding optimism and individuality. The gently flared silhouette, rounded collar, and oversized buttons highlight her preference for clean lines and impeccable tailoring.

This coat comes from a family with long ties to the Kennedys, shared among Mrs. Kennedy’s friends who were also expectant mothers. The last wearer preserved it with great care, making it a testament to the bonds of friendship and femininity surrounding the future First Lady.

We are honored to present this garment (Lot 2) in our inaugural New York Handbags & Fashion sale at the Breuer Building, a venue steeped in American cultural history. The coat‘s inclusion resonates deeply, as Mrs. Kennedy herself presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the building’s original opening. Bringing this emblematic piece back to the space she helped inaugurate celebrates her legacy as a style icon and her enduring influence on cultural institutions.
