Impressive bouquet of warm black currant, black cherry with a touch of green pepper, vanilla and herbs. One of those wines that smell so good you may forget you should be drinking it. Despite the smoke and chocolate flavors, a feminine and elegant wine that shared some of the poetic quality of Haut Brion.

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is much less expensive than the other cuvees and represents a noteworthy buy. Classic kirsch liqueur, roasted Provencal herb and sandy, loamy soil characteristics are found in this dense, opulent, voluptuously textured wine that is on a much faster evolutionary track than the 2010. It should drink well for a decade.

The interplay between the richness of the fruit and a classic sense of structure is totally spellbinding in this mysterious, dark Brunello. I love the element of sensuality here. The intensity of the fruit builds like waves towards the inevitable, luxurious, palate staining finish. This is simply a wine that won’t be denied. It is remarkable in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.
