Chipotle vs Homemade Chicken Burrito Bowls. Everyone loves Chipotle right? It’s the perfect post workout meal and is incredibly flavorful. But the portions can be a bit large and the price a touch high. .
On the right is my attempt at a Chicken Burrito Bowl.😇 The nice thing about creating the bowls yourself is that you can customize it anyway you like. I have 2-3x the chicken in my homemade bowl for far less than it would cost to add extra at the restaurant. I also prefer more vegetables and less rice which is an easy sub to account for. The biggest advantage of making them at home is the price. I can make my own for just about 1/3 of the price at Chipotle. It really doesn’t take long to prepare them either. I’ve made this recipe enough times that I can be in and out in an hour 😎
I find little wrong with eating at Chipotle. It’s quality food that can certainly fit within the confines of your diet if you frame it correctly. You may have to get creative with how you construct your bowls but it is certainly doable. They tend to put a bit more rice and beans in proportion to meat which isn’t ideal but you can always ask for less rice and extra meat for an upcharge. .
Your weekly lunches for work don’t have to be boring or expensive. My main goal when coming up with recipes is to make food that is enjoyable to eat. A healthy lifestyle is achieved when eating well isn’t a chore and i believe the best way to do this is through quality meals. .

IS A CALORIE A CALORIE?

Yes, if 1600kcal is an appropriate target for your weight loss goal, then sticking to either of these diets would bring results. ⚖️ ⠀

However foods offer us more than just calories. Traditionally 'healthy foods' tend to be advantageous for weight loss because they are more voluminous per kcal, more filling and more micro dense. All of this creates a healthier, less hungry environment, which makes sticking to the diet more possible. 🥕 ⠀

Trying to eat 1600kcal of processed foods will likely result in far less filling, less voluminous food and poor micro density. Feeling sluggish and very hungry is not a great way to go about losing weight and will almost certainly lead to overconsumption or going off track. 🍪 ⠀


FINDING YOUR BALANCE: ⠀

Both diets above have draw backs, there should always be an element of balance. Depriving yourself of all the foods you like and force feeding kale is a good way to get sick of dieting and give up entirely. If we understand that a calorie deficit is the physiological mechanism of weight loss, we can start to look at the practical methods that best help YOU achieve this: ⠀

Filling foods ✅
High protein ✅
Fruit and veg ✅
Oily fish/fats ✅
Foods you enjoy ✅
A way of eating you can sustain ✅ ⠀


This may mean swapping in a 250kcal chocolate bar in place of yogurt and fruit. In the context of a micro dense, high protein, calorie matched diet, this swap will have zero affect on your weight loss goal, other than that you may be slightly hungrier - but slightly happier! Choose the diet that helps you maintain a calorie deficit for the length of time required to lose weight, happily and healthily.

Most fruit proposes a plethora of vitamins and minerals to it’s consumer. And whilst the cringeworthy term, ‘nature’s candy’ is descriptively tragic, fruit is a source of sweet tasting whole food than offers micronutrients for overall health, fibre for satiety and water for hydration.

As you can see, each fruit has a different macro-nutritional make up. Some have more sugar, others have less. Some have more calories, others have less. And (not displayed here), some have more fibre, whilst others have less. -

It is worth noting that sugar extracted from fruit will have the exact same metabolic result as sugar extracted from a snickers. But the combination of sugar and fibre consumed via a whole food (in this case fruit) makes it more likely to satisfy one’s hunger more than food comprising of sugar and minimal fibre. However, one’s attainment of satiety will differ from another’s. -

Fruit is a more nutritious, calorie sparse source of energy than confectionary. But it is important to realise that caloric values of any food count towards overall energy balance. Fibre density per calories consumed may make one ‘feel fuller’ and therefore aid adherence to overall energy targets - especially calorie deficits.

Thus, consuming any item of ‘sweet’ tasting food is a valid option, but those which provide more satiety after consumption may support one’s energy balance more, whilst also delivering a host of nutritious advantages at the same time. 🔥
