You can observe the rise and fall of the samurai government in their gold coins. They started off in smaller denomination and of a higher gold purity but by the end they were severely debased. The Koban were large and hefty during the beginning of their issue but by 1868 they had shrunk significantly, much like their economy.

Reasons for this include inflation, natural disasters and famines disturbing the system but the most disruptive war the arrival of the westerners in the 1830s and their meddling which totally upended the entire monetary system and forced a modernisation programme.

Republic of Peru (1823) 8 Reales with crown countermark.

After the chaos of Spain and their involvement in the Napoleonic war, many of their colonies in South America became independent, including Peru. There were civil wars between Royalist and Republican forces all over the continent and coins like this are the result.

A Republican coin struck in Peru that was subsequently captured by the Royalists whom counterstruck it with a crown to make it "legal tender". Ultimately, the country gained it's independence but this coin serves as a reminder of its tumultuous creation.

Johnson Matthey 1oz silver Bodhisattva ingot charm.

These bars were especially made for Hong Kong in the 1980s. Mintage is estimated to be less than 250. This is the first one I've seen in it's intended case.

The 3rd and 4th image shows what the complete product looked like. These were to be hung in auspicious locations or even on car rear-view mirrors to bring luck and blessings onto people around it.

The figure depicted on the bar is Guanyin, a goddess who attained Buddhahood or "Bodhisattva". Her 1000 arms symbolise her ability to hear the cries of the suffering and offer them aid. She is one of the most popular figures in the religion besides The Buddha.

Considering that so few ingots were made, most I've found were still factory sealed and in their uncut sheets and this only happened once, I wonder what shenanigans happened when these came out. Sounds like the whole venture failed before it could get off the ground.
