Subtlety is a word very seldom used to describe Alexander McQueen’s work. McQueen is better known for his theatrical shows, savage yet beautiful couture, and his entrance into the fashion world as a brash outsider. However, traditional English tailoring, famous for its subtlety and understatement, was an integral part of his work. Any exploration of the Alexander McQueen ready-to-wear and menswear collections will show a distinct appreciation of English suiting; taking tradition and moving it forward with bold colours, graceful patterns, and detailed prints.
Apprenticed at Saville Row tailor Anderson & Sheppard at 16, McQueen learned the techniques of the great English masters before moving onwards to the high fashion world of Milan and, later, Paris. Ever the daredevil, he reportedly wrote ‘I’m a c***’ into the lining of a suit being made for Prince Charles.
There might be some who would debate the idea of McQueen’s clothing being of good style and taste, but it’s impossible to deny the effect he’s had on the world of fashion on a whole. That’s part of good style, understanding the rules so you can go on to create your own world while breaking them.
