《冨嶽三十六景》| 《凱風快晴》

This was one of the prints published in Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that helped secure Hokusai’s fame and popularity within Japan and overseas. It depicts Mount Fuji in a deep, saturated red; thin white lines of snow tracing lines down from the tip of the peak. Small clusters of clouds fill the sky, and tiny trees grow to the base of the mountain, indicating its massive size. Hokusai’s infatuation with Mount Fuji was much more than an admiration of its beauty. The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter told that a goddess placed an elixir of life at the top of the peak, and thus the mountain was a secret source of immortality, as well as a secret reason for Hokusai’ obsession with the mountain.

Van Gogh thought the landscape around Auvers-sur-Oise (FR) was beautiful. There were still old farms with thatched roofs, which made the countryside very picturesque.

Here he drew thatched houses with wavelike outlines. He first made an underdrawing in pencil. While painting, he did not follow that drawing very precisely. In some places, you can still see the pencil lines. He used light blue watercolour to fill in the sky and sweeping brushstrokes of thinned oil paint for the rest of the scene.

The works reflect the influence of Impressionism, Divisionism, and Japanese woodcuts. Almond Blossom was made to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, son of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo.

Story behind wheat field with cypresses |
Van Gogh painted this wheat field with cypresses when he was in a mental asylum in Saint Remy in the south of France. He painted this when he was allowed to make short walks and paint outside of the asylum. He was particularly impressed by the cypresses he saw there as he felt that this tree reflected some of his emotions. Van Gogh liked this painting so much that he repeated this painting three more times.
