Painting Landscapes in Porcelain

Hataman Touen has preserved the refined tradition of Nabeshima ware, one of Japan’s most distinguished porcelain styles. Renowned for its exceptionally delicate hand-painted decoration, each piece reflects the remarkable skill and patience of its artisans.

Among its most celebrated works are tea sets adorned with Sansui (landscape) paintings. Mountains, rivers, and distant villages unfold across the porcelain with quiet elegance, inviting moments of contemplation with every cup of tea. More than functional vessels, they embody the poetic spirit of Japanese landscape painting and the enduring artistry of Nabeshima craftsmanship.

Rediscovering the Spirit of Old Shigaraki

Rather than pursuing perfection, ceramic artist Q Tani seeks the quiet beauty of Ko-Shigaraki—the ancient Shigaraki ware.

Working with traditional Shigaraki clay and wood firing, Tani embraces the unpredictable dialogue between earth, flame, and time. The softly faded texture, known in Japanese as kase, evokes the feeling of objects that have lived long and meaningful lives. It is a beauty that cannot be manufactured, but only revealed through the natural process of firing.

His works invite us to appreciate not only form, but also the subtle traces of time embedded within the clay—an expression of the enduring spirit of Shigaraki craftsmanship.

重拾古信樂燒的精神

陶藝家谷穹 Q Tani 並不追求完美，而是探尋古信樂燒－古老的信樂燒－那份靜謐之美。

Hataman Touen’s Rim Mug, designed in collaboration with Hamano Takaharu with the vision of “pursuing the aroma and drinking comfort".

This mug adopts a barrel shape with a narrow opening that increases the intensity of the aroma of one’s beverage. The handle, designed specially for a good grip, is attached slightly lower than your average mug, thus lowering the centre of gravity and reducing its overall weight. This Rim Mug is a fine exemplar showcasing that both functionality and beauty can coexist.

Now available in the Japanese tableware section on the 10th floor of Causeway Bay SOGO Department Store.

A tea caddy made by Denshiro, a 170-year-old kabazaiku (traditional Japanese cherry bark craft) maker in Akita Prefecture. Polished plain wild cherry bark is used for exterior, allowing you to appreciate the unique character of the bark’s natural and
beautiful knots. With daily handling, the surface becomes more lustrous, and the color deepens into a subdued hue. The simple shape with a knob-less design that enables the inner lid to be used as a tea scoop when putting tea leaves into the teapot.
