根據歐盟(EU) 2019/904指令以及有關「生質基、可生物降解和可堆肥塑膠」等政策, PLA, PBAT也不能被濫用。PLA材質在外觀上跟既有的塑膠很像，對於回收業者體系，容易混淆，不僅回收端很難區分，若後續回收利用時混在一起，也會影響相關再利用產品的品質。此外，PLA需要在特定條件跟環境之下，才能分解，如全球現今關注海廢塑膠，而PLA在海洋中也無法分解，因此PLA也跟其他塑膠一樣受到限制。

A research report indicates that 90% of the paper straws tested were found to contain PFAS. 'Forever chemicals' were also identified in 80% of the brands of bamboo straws tested, 75% of the plastic straw brands, and 40% of the glass straw brands.
