These Face Brackets for masks will make breathing so much easier

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks may have been more difficult to find (it feels like an eternity ago that we were resorting to scarves, neck gaiters, and DIY bandanas), but now that they've become the new normal in 2020, everyone—from big-box retailers is churning out protective face coverings.

What's more, face mask accessories—including lanyards for your face masks and even cases to help rule out cross-contamination between your mask and other items in your bag, like your keys, glasses, wallet, and phone—have become a thing, and the latest item to hit the market is perfect for anyone who feels a bit smothered by their mask. Enter: face brackets for masks, small plastic and silicone circular inserts that sit between your face and covering.

Designed to help keep your glasses from fogging up and your makeup from smudging, mask brackets, most importantly, prevent your face covering from sitting uncomfortably close to your airways—making breathing with a mask on so much easier. Many have tabs on each side that you can hook onto the folds of your fabric or disposable mask, and even though the bracket props your mask up and away from your mouth, it still ensures your mask stays sealed around the edges.

Even experts think breathing brackets for masks are a good idea. ″As a practicing dentist, I am fairly used to wearing masks,″ says Marianna Weiner, DDS, a New York-based cosmetic dentist at Envy Smile Dental Spa. ″Before COVID-19, we were accustomed to wearing masks while performing treatments and it was never something that prevented us from feeling free to work the way we needed to.″ That being said, the general public—who aren't used to wearing a mask every day—might find face coverings uncomfortable or stifling. ″I am generally in support of the mask brackets themselves because, in theory, they keep us safe while also giving us a little extra room to breathe," adds Dr. Weiner.

On top of helping you breathe better, the bracket is also meant to create enough space to prevent makeup smudging and extend mask life by not encouraging consistent full-face contact, points out Dr. Weiner. The only downside she can see is that the bracket could apply more force on the bridge of your nose and chin, and that pressure could cause bruises, pain, or—worst-case scenario—TMJ (pain in the jaw joints), if worn frequently and for an extended period of time.

If you feel like your face covering has been smothering you (I mean, who doesn't?), it might be time to pick up a bracket. Ahead, the best face brackets for masks you can snap up on Amazon.

Face mask bracket - What you should know before ordering

Face mask brackets are becoming popular, but here is what you should know before ordering one.

A mask bracket is a cage-like frame that is designed in the shape of a mask. This is to be worn underneath a mask to hold the shape of the mask and be a barrier between it and the face.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic has been declared, face masks have become a necessity for all. Once we accepted their importance in our lives, innovation led to the market being flooded with many different options, from masks that kill the virus on contact to embroidered options to fit your stylish needs.

But despite the fact that people have hundreds of options to choose from when it comes to buying a mask, many still have a few common complaints. And that's where mask brackets come into the picture.

What are face mask brackets?

A face mask bracket or mask brace is a cage-like frame that is designed in the shape of a mask. This is to be worn underneath a mask to hold the shape of the mask and be a barrier between the mask and your face. It is made up of materials like plastic or silicone. It fits around the cheeks and chin and rests over the bridge of the nose. It may have hooks to clip the mask to. These are mostly designed to fit surgical masks and are easily available to buy online in India.

Why is the mask brackets gaining demand?

Reportedly, mask brackets are said to be useful in reducing the discomfort associated with wearing a mask. Here are a few supposed advantages of mask brace:

1. People often complain about breathing problems while wearing a mask and a mask brace may help you breathe more comfortably.

2. Some people might experience difficulty in speaking through a mask but a brace might allow you to speak more clearly.

3. Maskne, a kind of acne that occurs due to skin irritation and sweating from wearing a mask has become prevalent lately. The mask brace also claims to prevent this skin problem.

4. The fabric fibers of the mask may also tickle the tip of the nose or lips, making it bothersome for some. A mask brace prevents the mask from touching the face.

Is it safe to use a face mask bracket?

As of now, there is a scarcity of data as there are no studies and research done on the effectiveness of the face mask bracket. Therefore, there are a few concerns about using it.

A mask ensures safety by covering the mouth, nose and chin. A properly fitted mask should properly cover these parts of the face to provide maximum protection to you as well as others whom you come in contact with.

If a face mask bracket creates some tiny gaps between the edges of the mask, does not fit well on the face or keeps the mask from covering the face adequately then it may increase the risk of spreading COVID-19 . That is why, if you opt to wear a face mask bracket then you must find a bracket that fits the mask and your face perfectly. You would also need to wash or disinfect it after each use, just like your mask.

Those who are seeking maskne relief by using a face mask bracket should consider the fact that a mask bracket may equally irritate the skin. Your best bet to avoid maskne is to use a clean, soft fabric mask and wash the mask after every use (if it is reusable). Using a light moisturizer or sunblock cream may also be helpful.

In the end, you must keep in mind that the ultimate goal of a mask is safety, and face mask brackets should not compromise the purpose.

What are face mask brackets and are they really effective?

What is the use of a face mask bracket?
Face mask brackets are plastic or silicon-based support frames worn under the mask. They are generally pear-shaped, with a narrow top that fits over your nose and a wide bottom that perfectly settles at the bottom of your chin. There is a T-shape structure in the middle that covers your nose and mouth. They have small hooks at each end that can help to secure them onto the inside of a surgical-style mask, creating a barrier between your face and your mask.

These face mask brackets are claimed to make breathing and speaking from under the mask easy. The brackets prevent the fabric from touching your face, creating more breathing space and less friction. Wearing these face brackets can also prevent skin-related issues like masken, eczema and won't smear your lipstick.

Are they effective?
Face mask brackets are still new in the market and no study has been carried out to evaluate its effectiveness. But experts believe that there is no harm in using this accessory unless and until it fits perfectly on your face.

The major issue is the size of the brackets and the kind of mask they are used with. These face mask brackets are specifically made for surgical masks and might not fit well inside all kinds of fancy masks available in the market. The main purpose of a face mask is to create a barrier between you and droplets of other people and an ill-fitted mask can only increase the risk of infection.

The downside
The major downside of using a face mask bracket is the fitting. Most brackets are available in the standard size and might not fit well on everyone's face, creating a gap and increasing the risk of infection. Also, there are high chances that brackets may push the mask off your face if not secured perfectly.

The second flaw is the material used to make these brackets. Indeed these brackets might prevent friction between the face and mask, but what about the plastic and silicon frame rubbing your face. Staying in contact with the plastic and silicon structure for a long time can lead to irritation.

How to take care of your face mask brackets
If you decide to wear the brackets then make sure you clean them properly after every use. Scrub with soap and warm water, just like you wash your face mask. Keep them away from children as it could pose as a choking hazard.

HOW CHOPSTICKS WERE INVENTED

Created in China approximately 4,000-5,000 years ago, the earliest versions of something like chopsticks were used for cooking (they are perfect for reaching into pots full of hot water or oil) and were most likely made from branches. Although it is hard to nail down a firm date, it would appear that it wasn't until around 500-400 AD that they began to be used as table utensils.
A population boom across the country was one factor that contributed to this switch. Consequently, resources became incredibly scarce, especially for cooking. As a result, people started cutting their food into tiny pieces so it would cook more quickly.
The bite-sized morsels made table knives unnecessary, as very little was left to be sliced. But now they were great to eat with chopsticks, which were also made from cheap materials and made quickly. There was a trend born, then.
The decline in popularity of the table knife in these regions can also be attributed at this period to the teachings of Confucius, who was a vegetarian. He claimed knives weren't ideal for eating with.
Though more often than not, the first chopsticks were made of some inexpensive material, such as bamboo, later silver chopsticks were also used during Chinese dynastic times to avoid food poisoning. How? Silver utensils have been known to turn black if they come into contact with any life-threatening toxins.
Unfortunately, as it encounters the likes of cyanide or arsenic, among other toxins, silver does not turn black for those engaged in this activity. However, if affected by garlic, onion, or rotten eggs, it will most likely change color – all of which release hydrogen sulphide that interacts with the silver that allows it to change color.
For someone who has ever had trouble eating rice with chopsticks, you may have wondered why anyone would use this particular utensil to eat the food with. Maybe one of the earliest table utensils, like the spoon, will be working better here. But you see, in Asia, the majority of rice is either a short or medium grain variety, often with especially gummy or clumpy starches. As such, it sticks together, and chopsticks pick it up very quickly. By contrast, many Westerners eat long (often highly processed) grain rice with is much more fluffy, and the individual grains are more distinct and challenging to eat with chopsticks for the untrained side.
