Here we have the US Marine Raider R***e Squad (Mid-1942) as it existed in the 2nd Raider Battalion, aka Carlson's Raiders. Check out our full article on Carlson's Raider R***e Company: https://www.battleorder.org/carlsons-raiders-coy-1942

The squad was led by a Corporal (at this time Marine Squad Leaders were Corporals while Sergeants were Section Leaders) who was armed with an M1 Garand (the 2nd Raiders were one of the few combat units to get M1 Garands, the 1st Raiders still had M1903s). Carlson's Raiders together with the Paramarines were the pioneers of the fire team concept in the Marine Corps, with a 2nd Raider R***e Squad consisting of 3 Fire Groups. Carlson was likely inspired by the Communist Chinese forces who used 3-man cells in 3-cell squads during his time as an intel officer in China.

Each group had a Group Leader (with a Thompson or Reising SMG), Automatic R***eman (with an M1918A2 BAR), and R***eman with an M1 Garand. All were Privates or Private First Class.

This is the organization that would have been active during the raid on Makin Island. After September 1942, the Squad Leader also got an SMG.
