What can geometry do in itself? Does it really make all the difference when it comes to how capable a mountain bike is?
Oh yes. It does make all the difference.
See for example I used to think that my bike was lacking grip because the wheels are 26 inch, and because the rims and tires werent wide enough.
Same wheels and tires on a radically longer bike and I found that those wheels and tires had all the grip I needed. That is true both downhill and uphill. The latter is further helped by the extremely steep seat tube. Steep climbs on which I would spin out and nearly fall on my back are suddenly fine. And I never even have to make any effort to put my weight forward.

SLIDE LEFT FOR GEOMETRY. So how important are all those numbers?There is a lot of talk about long low and slack these days, and as my old frame is 16 years old, taking its components and putting them on a very progressive frame was a unique opportunity for a very clean experiment so to say. What can geometry do in itself? Same wheels, same suspension components, same everything. But the geo is vastly different. To only mention a few numbers, the head angle is 3° slacker, the seat 9° steeper. Lengthwise, the change is even more radical. The reach is 125mm longer and the wheelbase nearly 200mm longer, with the chainstays only growing by 10mm.

Chapter 4 marks the first point in this story where things started getting real. I quit my office job, made me some room in my late grandfather’s tiny shed, got me a simple TIG welder and got to it. And by it I mean fusing scraps of metal together and trying to figure out what it was that had gone wrong. Which was a lot of things to begin with but they gradually got fewer as time passed. Eventually I also decided that I needed to squeeze an oxy-acetylene setup in the aforementioned 2 by 3 meter shed, so I started practicing with that too. Fast forward a year and a half, and the first post on this instagram account was born. Quite a journey already, and I dare hope it is only the beginning. @ Budapest, Hungary

Chapter 3 of how we got here marks the end of an era so to say. I started teaching myself CAD to be able to design my bike. At the same time I researched materials with all their advantages and disadvantages as well as how to source them. And among all that there came a point where I realized that something fundamental has changed about the way I look at bikes. I had the interest to gather what was new and why - more than ever really - but I no longer had visions of how I would get me this bike or that if I had the money. Although it was vary far off, something in me already believed very firmly that my next bike would be one that I myself make, and not one I buy. @ Budapest, Hungary

On to chapter 2 of how we got here.
This is the part where I found myself working an office job with lots of idle time on my hand in front if a computer. So much time in fact that I got to dive deep into mtb geometry numbers and suspension kinematics. This is also where I first stumbled upon the likes of and the like and realized that steel, along with custom made bikes was in fact a thing.
It is here that it first occured to me that - maybe - Building a bike from scratch is something that I might be able to do.

With this little first project of mine slowly coming to an end I thought I’d reflect on all that got me to this point.
This is chapter 1.
Where I got my first proper full sus bike at the age of 12 and with it an obsession with mountain bikes in general.
Where I spent the next 12 years looking at all the manufacturers websites on a daily basis, drooling at all the bikes i’d like to have while trying to follow what’s what and why 2010’s model is better than 2009’s and so on. The good old days, that is.
