Tangan means “hand” in Indonesian, and the name reflects what this boutique is about. John and Cynthia Hardy spent decades collecting objects on their travels, including baskets, textiles, tools and crafts made directly by the people behind them. They opened Tangan at Bambu Indah in Ubud to share these pieces with guests. The boutique was built by Bamboo Pure and designed by IBUKU Studio — Elora Hardy as a floating Lotus inspired pavilion crafted structure with glass walls, bamboo and copper. Every object in the shop has a story and a maker behind it. Open daily 11am to 9pm, inside Bambu Indah, Ubud

Here’s a lovely bit of Indonesian craft to look out for the next time you’re visiting Tangan.

This table runner comes from Solo, Central Java, where batik is an integral part of the region’s textile tradition. Here, batik cloth is brought together with traditional needlework to make something unique for the table.

The patterned textiles and hand-stitched details give the piece its bold character, with small variations that make each one different.
