Yesterday I shared with you a bag that I made using some of my favorite fabric that I found in Indonesia, and today I wanted to share some of the backstory behind the fabric.
I was spending time on Nusa Penida this past spring, a beautiful quiet island away from the Bali buzz. We were heading back to our bungalow after a fantastic morning dive with Manta Rays when we drove past this little roadside fabric stand, pulled a u-turn and hopped off our scooter. There, I met Made, who runs the lovely Jero Rawa homestay and is the weaver of most of this incredible fabric. It was a fabric lovers dream, so many colors and prints and textures!
While Indonesia and Bali are known for their fabrics and sarongs, Nusa Penida is specifically known for its own unique traditional hand woven design, known as Rangrang. Rangrang uses geometric diamond motifs, and is traditionally worn in religious ceremonies. A full sized sarong can take up to 2 months to weave and is typically dyed using natural dyes derived from the surrounding fruits and tree barks.
Meeting Made, and finding her fabrics was one of the highlights of my entire trip. Rangrang fabric is essential to the culture of Nusa Penida and I feel so fortunate that I got to meet one of the women continuing the tradition and keeping her culture alive.
I can’t wait to create more bowls and bags with these bright and vibrant textiles, and share a little piece of Nusa Penida with all of you 🌺

I want to take a moment to thank every one of you who came out this past Wednesday to the Holiday Pop Up ⭐️
Thank you for supporting local artists, Thank you for supporting your local community, and an extra special Thank You from me, for supporting my first event as an artist ⭐️
It was an evening filled with friendly faces and fun, live music, delicious food, dancing, and artisans proudly representing their work. A wonderful reminder of exactly why I love this community so very much ⭐️

I want to take a moment to share with you the origin of the fabric used in the first collection of bowls.
✨
Last spring I spent a month traveling through Indonesia. I explored temples and caves, rode scooters in quest of secret beaches and learned to cook traditional recipes. From high clifftops, I met fishermen casting long lines into the sea, and watched seaweed farmers methodically wading through their plots. I dove with manta rays, hiked with Komodo dragons, watched the sun sink behind volcanos, and woke daily to the sounds of prayer.
✨
It was an awe-inspiring, enriching and humbling experience. The people were some of the kindest I have ever met traveling, their cultures and religions both beautiful and complex. From the diverse flowers to the healthy coral, the lush green jungles and saturated blue sea, the colors were bright and bold and well represented in all the fabrics I found.
✨
It is a part of the world I know I want to return to again, but until then, I am reminded of my time there with each bowl in this collection that I created. I hope the colors will bring brightness and happiness into your lives, and inspire you to explore a new place in the world that YOU have never been!

Hi 👋 My name is Emilie, and I am the creator of 🌀🌎✨
I started with the idea of blending my love for travel with my love of creating. With this in mind, I began collecting different fabrics and accessories on my adventures and incorporating them into my art.
My inspiration comes from the colors, textures, and background behind every piece that I use. Each one has a story, a memory, a cultural connection, and a bit of my own flair.
From my home nestled in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont, I sew each creation with intention, love and care - with the goal of further connecting us to the beauty of this world.
