April was a big month📚 5 weeks of Storytime at Si Kecil🌈 - 2 of them with special guest authors🤩

We kicked off the month with Easter themed Storytime🐰 followed the next week with readings by one of the dads, Scott, sharing a couple of books from his son’s home library, which was fun to make the props for✂️

Our first guest author was James Doyle sharing his debut children’s book “Where the Tall Trees Grow”🌳 The kids had so much fun trying out different yoga pose based on the different animals on each page🐵🐍🐺🐅🐘🦒

Next, we celebrated Earth Day🌎 with author Susan W. Allen reading her all natural book -printed on recycled papers with vegetable dye- in 3 languages (English, Indonesian and Japanese with the help of Mr. Ikkoshi): “Mirror of the Earth / Cermin dari Dunia / しせんのかがみ”💚

Finally, we closed the month with a new book from Indonesian publisher “Gelembung Bara” and the kids had a blast blowing bubbles🫧

Join us for more stories and magic at Si Kecil Storytime🌈 in May - every Wednesday 4.30 pm - always fun and always free!📖

Recently the world was celebrating “Book Day”📚 Postings about their favorite books and quotes on the importance of reading were shared. My little one’s school held over a month long Readathon! Kids dressed up as characters from books to school✨And it got me thinking on how or why I started Si Kecil🌈

You may have heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a reader” Well, it was ‘a village’ that inspired me and that village was… Northcote, Australia.

We lived there twice, first when our little one was turning one, second when she was turning 5. Books have been a part of her life since she was born! Family and friends from Australia sent her books as a newborn gift🎁 and they continue gifting books on her birthdays, Christmases and any opportunity they get.

There’s a library within walking distance where we lived and as far as I know there’s a library in every council (kinda like a village here). They offered weekly Storytime for babies and toddlers, and a separate one for older kids. They also ran a nation-wide program called “1000 Books Before School” to encourage parents to read to their young children. We could borrow as many books as we like!📚 (Or as much as I could carry in my bag while walking home😅) All FREE.

Books are just accessible everywhere, in schools, in people’s houses, in front of the house, bookshops, op-shops, coffee shops, etc.

And no matter how old (Bonnie’s great grandmother on the third slide was 101 years old!💕) everybody is happy to read to the little ones. Everytime a family member or a friend came to visit they would always read to her and that’s how they bonded. Because reading to children everynight before bed is part of the culture there. And so everybody grew up a reader.

When we returned to Ubud, I couldn’t easily find children’s books for my now hungry little reader. Surely I wasn’t the only mum feeling that way?! And that’s when I decided to open a little bookshop with free reading room in the middle of a little village called Nyuh Kuning🌴

Let’s be part of the village and gift a book or read to your little nieces, nephews and children📖

Next will share how this little village raise a reader😊

Simply special💕 At Si Kecil Storytime, author sang a passage from her book “Mirror of The Earth” (Cermin dari Bumi / しぜんのかがみ) in 3 languages🇮🇩🇺🇸🇯🇵 with the help of Mr. Ikkoshi for the Japanese🙏

An ode to the earth on this Earth Day!🌅

Happy Earth Day (22 April 2026)!🌎 Though it’s not always a happy matter when we think about the earth’s condition these days… From “The Story of Climate Change” to “Red Alert! Endangered Animals Around the World” a couple of reference books to get your little ones up to speed.

Followed by the loving approach into our eco-problems “Love Your Mother” by Veronika Bajwa for the younger ones… to an adventure into eco-wonderland in search of “The Magical Everything” .magical.everything by Jenny Pinto for the older kids.

And a series of “Adventures with Finn and Skip” by Brendan Kearney - following a fisherman and his dog into the forest, ocean, arctic, etc. as they tackle environmental issues - to get the kids into action.

Then we have a couple of haunting yet beautiful picture books “The Flower”🌺 by John Light and “The Crown”👑 by Emily Kapff - both these books have similar theme, stories from the future where the earth is covered by waste, where no flowers grow… A girl wears a crown made from the rubbish passed down to her by previous generations, but beneath the landfill she discovers a book of pictures that show her the past... A boy finds a book in the library labelled ‘Do Not Read’. In it, he comes upon pictures of bright, vibrant objects called flowers…

So let’s take a moment and read these mindful mini books from “Slow Down …in the park” and “Slow Down …on your doorstep” series, while we can still enjoy nature🌱

All these books are available at Si Kecil Bookshop🌈 Ubud, Bali.

This Earth Day (Wed, 22 April, 4.30 PM), Si Kecil🌈 will have a very special Storytime with author who’ll read her book “Mirror of the Earth” (Cermin dari Bumi / しぜんのかがみ ) in English and Indonesian, along with a guest reader to read the Japanese version.

Written in 3 languages 🇺🇸🇮🇩🇯🇵 this playful children’s book is inspired by the real life of Yuko Kitta whom the author met many years ago in Bali. Yuko is a professional natural dyer and natural clothes designer from Japan. Her life story moved the author so deeply that she created this children’s book in her honor and in honor of Mother Earth🌎

Launched at UWRF last year, the book is printed on recycled paper and printed with vegetable dyes. Some copies will be available during Storytime - which you can get it signed directly by the author😊

Afterwards the children can draw and color on indigo recycled cards provided by , a creative nest in Ubud run by Susan in harmony with nature🌱

DM us if you’d like to book a copy of her book, but the Storytime itself is FREE! No RSVP needed, just come. This session is suitable for 5-9 years old.
