When people see my pet portraits, I’ve been asked many times over the past year or so, “Do you do portraits of people?”
My answer has always been no! 😂
People portraits honestly scare me. It’s so easy to get them wrong, and I’m much more comfortable capturing the character and essence of a pet. There’s something incredibly difficult about capturing the essence of a person in a portrait.
But then I had one particularly persistent customer who wouldn’t take no for an answer! He insisted that I could do Albert Einstein, because he’s so recognisable.
So, rather reluctantly, I took on the project — although I warned him that my confidence was pretty low!
When I finished the first version, I was actually quite pleased with myself. But… the customer felt I hadn’t quite captured Einstein’s expression correctly. 😬
So, back to the drawing board I went.
The second time, I got it — and thankfully, he was really happy with the result! 🙌
I wanted this portrait to be more than just a picture of Einstein, so I incorporated some of his most important equations and famous quotes, along with the iconic clock tower in Bern, Switzerland, which is associated with the period when Einstein developed his ideas on relativity.
I also wanted to bring lots of colour into the piece — almost as a visual representation of his incredible mind and the wonderful complexity of his brain.
There has been speculation over the years about whether Einstein may have been autistic. I might be biased being autistic myself but I reckon he was. Either way, his extraordinary way of thinking continues to fascinate and inspire people around the world.
After all that will I take on another person portrait? I don’t know, they still scare me 😂I’d still rather do pets 🐾
