For 27-year-old Oisín Pollard and his family in Bagenalstown, the refusal by the HSE to fund the drug Skyclarys feels like a devastating blow as his Friedreich's Ataxia worsens daily.

His mother Elaine fears her son is being "thrown to the wolves," angrily rejecting claims that the rejection is based on evidence. She believes politicians "want to portray it as science-led," but insists the reality is simple: "It’s budget-led, it’s money-led."

With a final decision expected on August 25th, approximately 200 affected individuals across Ireland are left waiting to see if their health will take priority over financial balance sheets. Time is rapidly running out for Oisín and the entire Friedreich's Ataxia community, who are desperately fighting for the right to access a life-stabilizing treatment.
