CROSSROADS..... Introducing my newest piece which is currently part of our members exhibition "SLร - The Way, The Path, The Road. Celebrating the ethos of John Moriarty at West Cork Collective | Gift Shop | Art Gallery | Creative Hub in Ballinspittle. There are over 60 different original pieces to enjoy in the Gallery until 31st August.
This piece is larger than my usual at 30x30cm and is made entirely from maerl. A true labour of love as it took an age to complete. The maerl I found beached on the Wild Atlantic Way had to be sifted through and sorted to remove all the debris, then colour matched before being patiently placed piece by tiny piece. Maerl, often mistaken for coral, is an algae which grows in shallow seabed. Only when it dies off does it break off & wash ashore where it eventually bleaches white.
This piece captures crossroads on my own path when I left my corporate career for my new artistic life around the time of my beloved Mom's passing & during the pandemic.
In the words of John Moriarty "Underneath a motorway, there was one a road. Underneath the road there was a lane. Underneath the lane there was a track and Underneath the track there was once an animal path. Hoof prints under the concrete"
