I took this photo yesterday morning at Café Lounge, our café in Carrick-on-Shannon, as the sunlight cast the word “Special” across the counter beneath the Poursteady.

Is New Dawn one of your favourite Artessa coffee? It’s strong-bodied coffee, sweet and spicy with honey notes.

The name New Dawn is chosen to honour the legendary singer Nina Simone. We always listen music (all genres from jazz to dub) while we working in the roastery. When we were working on this blend we listened a lot of her fantastic music, so when we had to choose a name, the answer came immediately. One of her iconic songs includes the lyrics, “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day...” , words almost everyone recognises. New Dawn reminds us not only of Nina Simone, but also of the quiet power of starting the day with a great cup of coffee.

The coffees used in this blend – Burundi and Indonesia Kalossi. Two very different coffees creating an exciting taste profile, heavy bodied, syrupy and spicy.

We created the Smooth Blend to provide our customers with a different option, a counterpoint to our richer, more intense offerings. We recognized that sometimes, you crave a coffee that's easy to drink, yet still full of flavor. We wanted something clean and sweet, a coffee that could be enjoyed any time of day. The idea was to let the inherent qualities of the beans shine through, creating a harmonious and balanced cup.

I got a surprise call earlier today from RTÉ Radio 1’s Oliver Callan show to talk about iced coffee.

We chatted about our cafe: Café Lounge, how popular iced coffees have become, and how easy they are to make at home.

A quick reminder, for a simple iced latte:
Fill a tall glass with ice.
Add cold milk.
Pour over one or two hot espresso shots.

That’s it really.

For a vanilla iced latte, check the baking aisle in the supermarket for vanilla essence or vanilla flavoured sugar. No need for anything too complicated.
