Step into the wild waters of sixteenth-century Mayo with "The Pirate Queen" by Ariel Lawhon.

Inspired by the extraordinary life of Grace O’Malley, the legendary Irish sea captain and folk heroine, this gripping historical novel brings one of Mayo’s most unforgettable women to life.

Born into the seafaring O’Malley clan on the shores of Clew Bay, Grace was never destined to stay on dry land. From family and clan rivalries to the growing threat of English power, she fought to protect her people, her family and her way of life. 🌊⛵️

A story of courage, ambition, love and rebellion, set against the dramatic coastline of our own county. And if you know Mayo, there’s something particularly special about seeing Clew Bay and the world of the O’Malleys brought to life on the page. 💙

📚 "The Pirate Queen" by Ariel Lawhon is now in store at The Castle Bookshop.

If you love historical fiction, Irish history, strong female characters and a story with plenty of adventure, this one deserves a place on your reading pile. ⚓️🌊

📚🏆 A very proud moment for Mayo Books Press and Mayo! 🏆📚

We are delighted to share that Mayo Books Press has been shortlisted for the Gradam Foilsitheoireachta 2026, with Breandán Mac Conamhna’s "Scéal Muirí Mhuigh Eo" nominated for Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin.

Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin celebrates excellence in Irish language publishing, recognising not only outstanding Irish language writing, but also the high standards achieved by publishers across Ireland.

"Scéal Muirí Mhuigh Eo" takes readers along the deep, roaring maritime heritage of County Mayo, exploring the coastline’s history, seafaring traditions and rich folklore. Rooted in the Iorras Gaeltacht and written in the Irish language of Iorras, it celebrates a very special part of Mayo’s heritage and the people who have shaped it.

Breandán, who was born and raised in Béal Deirg, has dedicated much of his life to education and to documenting and celebrating the heritage of the west of Ireland. "Scéal Muirí Mhuigh Eo" is his sixth book and one of two he has written in Irish.

We are particularly proud to see a book so deeply rooted in the history, culture, language and people of Mayo receive recognition on a national stage. 💚

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony at An Taibhdhearc, Galway, on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, with a collective prize fund of €17,000.

Fingers crossed for Breandán and "Scéal Muirí Mhuigh Eo"! 🤞📖

Weekend Read! 🇮🇳📚✨

"The Complex" by Karan Mahajan 🏛️🔥

What happens when family, power, ambition and old secrets all collide under one roof?

Set within a sprawling complex in Delhi, Karan Mahajan’s "The Complex" follows the sons and daughters of influential political figure SP Chopra as they navigate love, loyalty, rivalry and the enormous shadow cast by their family’s legacy.

When Sachin Chopra leaves for America with his new bride Gita, they hope to build a life away from the pressures of the family compound. But Delhi has other plans. As Gita finds herself threatened by Sachin’s predatory uncle Laxman, and Vibha struggles to protect both her family’s reputation and her own sense of self, tensions begin to rise.

And as violence erupts across India and long-buried secrets surface, the Chopras are forced to confront just how much power, tradition and family loyalty can cost.

A gripping family saga meets political drama, "The Complex" is a story of ambition, revenge, love, betrayal and redemption, packed with complicated characters and plenty of secrets to uncover. 👀📖

✨ “Mahajan is a confident, ambitious and increasingly important writer.” - Jonathan Dee ✨

Perfect for readers who love big family dramas, political intrigue, complicated relationships and novels that pull you into another world. 🌏📚
