Cork Anarchist Library - Tuesday October 14th 7-9pm- theme will be, education - at Rebel Reads Marina Commercial Park.

Cork Anarchist Library is a monthly gathering where ideas on revolution, liberation and real equality are allowed to circulate freely. CAL themed discussions are always healthy and friendly.

Octobers theme will be on, education. Anarchism has had a big, if perhaps unrecognised, influence on today’s education system.
Examples include,
The Spanish Ferrer movements libertarian schools
- inspired as it was by the anarchist pedagogy of Franciso Ferrer.
Freire schools - Brazilian philosopher and educator Paulo Freire, who promoted critical Pedagogy through his 1968 book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed while also influencing liberation theology.

Other examples can be seen in the spirit of self sufficiency, hacking and open source soft/hardware, repair cafes, self building of housing and design, free access to academic books to resources peer reviewed journals and studies, through to slogans such as “educate agitate organise”, the requirement to educate in order to encourage worker self management etc

Just a few questions and things that a topic like this could bring up 🙂

Cork Anarchist Library - “how to organise better meetings”, Tuesday September 9th 7-9pm !

@ Rebel Reads Marina Commercial Park.

Cork Anarchist Library is a monthly gathering where ideas on revolution, liberation and real equality are allowed to circulate freely. CAL themed discussions are always healthy and friendly.

Septembers theme is around “how to organise better meetings”

Having effective meetings in our struggles, movements and prefigurative experiments is at the absolute kernel of creating what we want in the here and now.

The lessons of the history of anarchist participation, - in its many trialed methods of decision making and resulting need for agreed institutions over time, - shows a development of what can be seen as a social technology of participatory meetings.

Can this history developed through the generations of organisers from antiwar movements, civil rights, union, environmental, feminist, and many other movements, lend us to ensure effective meetings whilst also preventing the reemergence of structured or corporate division of labour, or of a sclerotic leadership class emerging?

How should decisions be made and voted upon? The ups and downs of majority or consensus options, or mixtures of both. Just a few questions and things that a topic like this could bring up 🙂

Cork Anarchist Library - “Anarchism and young people”, Tuesday August 12th 7-9pm !

Cork Anarchist Library is a monthly gathering where ideas on revolution, liberation and real equality are allowed to circulate freely. CAL themed discussions are always healthy and friendly.

August’s theme is around “Anarchism and young people”.

We are certainly living in strange times, nay timelines!, and yet, many say we’re simply looking at a repeat of history.

Along with the rise of the far-right we see examples of young people’s desire for autonomy and self determination, in the here and now, and not some distant future.

The appeal of broad participation, of direct action, alongside genuine grass root mutual aid organisation, leads to a questioning of authority and a revulsion to state power and indeed what it does to “the left”.
This is fuelled, with the ever present crises of the cost of living, climate, inequality, corporate tyranny in the workplace, etc - but also now by the genocide and the triumphalism of the far right and the billionaire class.

Can it be said that the age of revolution is not over? Will we see the new generations make their mark on the revolution(s) of the still young 21st century by tracing their origins from anarchism?

Cork Anarchist Library -July 8th - “Possible Future Societies”, at Rebel Reads Marina Commercial Park.

Tuesday July 8th 7-9pm !

Cork Anarchist Library is a monthly gathering where ideas on revolution, liberation and real equality are allowed to circulate freely. CAL themed discussions are always healthy and friendly.

Julys theme is around the concept of not just pointing out what possibly everyone knows, Crapitalism sucks!, and will be “Possible Future Societies” .

It could range from the many social anarchist options, from Bookchin’s Liberation Municipalism ( presently being prefigured in Rojava) to post-scarcity visions in FALC ( Fully Automated Luxury Communism ) and similar and Anarchist reactions to that, along with the concept of techno feudalism and its effect there…

More can include earlier shorter examples from within the works of (Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin etc) and the general recent appeal of what can be summarised as public luxury and private sufficiency, and thinking about the present day lessons of history, ( or the what-if histories) such as the Spanish Revolution and the Russian.

Can inspiring visions energise the working class towards anarchism? Is there a balance in letting a thousands visions bloom now in order to not let vacuums be filled… vs the dangers of blueprinting away the voices of the future in an authoritarian way?

Cork Anarchist Library - May - ‘Anarchism and Direct Action’, at Rebel Reads Marina Commercial Park.

Tuesday May 13th 7-9pm ! Tomorrow!!

Cork Anarchist Library is a monthly gathering where ideas on revolution, liberation and real equality are allowed to circulate freely.

Books are browsed, shared and borrowed. The library is social and informal but there’s time for serious discussion as well and each month sees a different theme highlighted.

May’s theme is ‘Anarchism and Direct Action’, - how do we know when an activity is direct action? Should the ends justify the means in our struggles? and what is the difference with using authoritarian structures for groups opposing oppressions or using structures that aim for classlessness in the struggles of the present ? Some current or historical examples can be raised to discuss.
