Twelve poetry books recently added to Secondhand ... a perfectly reasonable excuse to ignore everything else for a while.

There’s Seamus Heaney, Derek Walcott, Siegfried Sassoon and Rupi Kaur in the video, with eight more waiting for you to spot them. Some you’ll know by heart, others might be the reason you came in for one book and left with three.

Who would you instantly pick up?

Donncha O’Callaghan called into Chapters with Disaster Dad: Animal Antics, and the photographic evidence suggests he was allowed near the books without adult supervision!

A wildlife park. A school trip. Donncha O’Callaghan volunteering to help. What could possibly go wrong?! 🦒🦁🐒🦓

Disaster Dad: Animal Antics, the third book in his gloriously chaotic children’s series follows Dad, Finn and Emma on a class trip where the animals may be the least unpredictable part of the day.

Always lovely to see you, Donncha! The book is out now, written with Karen Owen, illustrated by Jenny Taylor and published by Eriu. 📚

I went down an Alice Hoffman rabit hole this Spring ... without connecting her to Practical Magic 🤦‍♀️ Since then a small Alice Hoffman takeover has happened in Secondhand and I am very happy!

There are six books in this reel: The Rules of Magic, The River King, The World That We Knew, The Dovekeepers, The Marriage of Opposites and Seventh Heaven. Between them, you can travel from a family curse to a boarding school mystery, Nazi-occupied France, ancient Masada, nineteenth-century St Thomas and a suburb where the neighbours are watching.

If you know Hoffman through Practical Magic, this is a lovely chance to see how far her imagination travels - now I only need one of you to trade in Practical Magic so I can keep reading!

We have some signed copies of Nikita Hand's ‘Not the Perfect Victim’.

In this memoir, Nikita tells her story in her own words - from the life she had before the assault, through her fight for justice and the difficult work of rebuilding afterwards. It is deeply personal material, and we're glad to be able to make copies available to readers who want to hear from her directly.

Please be aware this might be difficult to read and personal discretion is advised.

A book with its own little archive inside. 💙

This first edition of Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World has arrived in Secondhand with a newspaper interview tucked between its pages. Victoria White spoke to Cunningham for The Irish Times around the time of the book’s Irish publication, and a previous owner kept the piece with their copy.

First published in 1990, the novel follows Bobby, Jonathan and Clare as they try to make a family on their own terms.

Cunningham is an American novelist who later won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Hours. Here, we have one of his earlier books, accompanied by a glimpse of how it reached Irish readers.

Whoever saved that interview: thank you. We’ll keep it with the book. 📖

Lights, camera, Alan Nolan! 🎬

Alan came into Chapters to sign copies of Lights, Camera, Mayhem! and, as these photos demonstrate, required absolutely no direction 😊

Alan has given young readers years of funny, fast-moving adventures, from the Molly Malone and Bram Stoker mysteries to Sam Hannigan and the Last Dodo, Fintan’s Fifteen and Conor’s Caveman. He writes, illustrates and visits schools and libraries to get children making stories of their own. In 2024, Children’s Books Ireland recognised his outstanding contribution to children’s books with its Annual Award.

His latest adventure takes us to Dublin in 1937 - the film-mad Grand Central Cinema Club are trying to make a movie when a famous child actress arrives in town... meeting your heroes, they discover, can be a complicated business.

Signed copies are instore & online now! Thank you, and

𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗡𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 - w𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀!

I’m in the middle of writing a piece about the writers who keep boys reading. Patrick Ness is one of them, alongside Darren Shan, Oisín McGann and Robert Muchamore. Writers who give young readers danger, strange worlds, difficult choices and the pleasure of finding a genre that feels like theirs.

For some boys, The Knife of Never Letting Go is the book that keeps their head in the book, then they find The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men and suddenly nobody needs to remind them to read.

So yes, we were delighted, excited and genuinely honoured to welcome Patrick in - it sounds like hyperbole I know, but when you listen to the parents who are so delighted to have found books for their kids, or kids themselves when they have found books that speak to them, you are reminded again what a special gift reading is.

Thank you, Patrick Ness for visiting.

Signed copies are instore and online now - including Piper at the Gates of Dusk, Patrick’s return to the world of Chaos Walking.

Some changes in Secondhand!

We have extended the BookTok bays respondse to the enormous appetite for books discovered and revived through social media. Alongside these, we have created a dedicated Featured on Our Socials section beside the newly extended Secondhand desk, so you can easily find the books featured online - if you can find them there ... David and his team of Eimilie, Susan, Zoelie or Charlie will be able to direct you to to vintage Poolbeg editios, Folio Society treasures and anything and everything in between!

We have also introduced several bays near the desk for rare, collectible and more unusual books. These are designed for browsing and discovery - it is hard to show you evreything and sometimes the joy is discovering it for yourself!
