FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Muiris Buckley

SPECIES: Porbeagle Shark

SIZE: 1.7m | Estimated 77–88lb

REPORT: While wreck fishing off the West Cork coast, Galley Head, our fish kept getting taken. I spotted a shark following one of the fish towards the boat, so I decided it was time to put out a shark line.

Within 10 minutes, she was on.

The Blue Shark measured 1.7m and was estimated at between 77–88lb. It was an incredible experience seeing sharks actively circling the boat and looking so healthy.

A quick photo before the shark was handled with care and safely released.

Perfect. That short link goes directly to Henry Gilbey’s review, so we’ll use it.

🎣 FAVORITE BLUE BIRD SHARP JIG 🎣

The Favorite Blue Bird Sharp Jig is a seriously impressive light lure rod, combining sensitivity and precision with plenty of power when a decent fish comes along.

Available in:

🎣 8’3” — 4–16g
🎣 8’6” — 5–20g

Light, ultra-fast and extremely responsive, these rods are ideal for soft plastics, creature baits, bottom-contact fishing and lighter bass lure fishing.

Henry Gilbey recently put both Sharp Jig models through their paces and was seriously impressed with their performance and value for money. He even landed bass to 70cm on the lighter 4–16g model.

For anglers looking for a sensitive, sharp lure rod without stepping into premium-rod money, these are well worth a look.

Junior fish of the month entry

NAME: Nathan McDermott (Age 10)

SPECIES: Bass

SIZE: N/A

REPORT: On a trip to the Wicklow rocks in search of Nathan’s first Bass, we had no luck for the first two hours. Nathan decided to switch over to a pearl white Savage Gear Seeker and slowly work the lure back.

During the retrieve, he initially thought he had snagged the bottom until he felt the unmistakable shake of a fish’s head. After a brilliant fight, Nathan managed to land an absolute cracking Bass.

Unfortunately, we had no measuring tape or scales with us, so rather than keep the fish out of the water any longer, we took a few quick photos before Nathan safely released it to fight another day.

What a first Bass and a day Nathan won’t forget!

Junior fish of the month entry

NAME: Alexander Tucker (Age 13)

SPECIES: Perch

SIZE: 44cm

REPORT: I was fishing my local canal when I hooked into this specimen Perch. It put up an unreal fight before I eventually managed to safely land it.

At 44cm an absolutely cracking Perch and a fish to remember. After a quick photo, it was safely released to fight another day.

FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Ian O’Connor

SPECIES: Blue Shark

SIZE: Approx. 2.3m | 120lb

REPORT: Fishing out of Courtmacsherry with Dave Edwards Charters, this cracking Blue Shark was taken on herring using a 10/0 hook.

At approximately 2.3 metres long and estimated around 120lb, the shark put up a fantastic fight before eventually being brought alongside the boat. After a quick photo, the priority was getting this impressive fish safely back into the water as soon as possible.

A serious Blue Shark and certainly one to remember.

FISH OF THE MONTH WINNERS

Another month wrapped up and two cracking winners chosen from a seriously strong selection of entries.

SENIOR WINNER – CONOR LOWRY
SPECIES: Tench
SIZE: 8lb 6oz

Conor takes the Senior Fish of the Month with an incredible record-breaking haul of Irish Tench. His session produced fish of 8lb 6oz, 8lb 4oz, 7lb 12oz and 7lb 4oz, with two of the fish breaking the Irish record. The 8lb 6oz fish was also a new PB for Conor. A dream Tench session and a very worthy winner.

JUNIOR WINNER – NICHOLAS JACOTA
SPECIES: Couches Bream

Nicholas takes the Junior Fish of the Month with this brilliant Red Gilt Bream from the Beara Peninsula. A cracking and unusual catch while bottom fishing with ragworm, and the fish was returned quickly rather than being kept out of the water for a measurement.

Congratulations to Conor and Nicholas, and thanks to everyone who sent in entries this month.

🚨 ANGLERS – WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! 🎣

Fingal County Council is proposing new Beach/Foreshore Bye-Laws for 2026 which could have a major impact on sea angling across North Dublin.

The proposed restrictions include prohibiting fishing in designated bathing areas and restrictions affecting Blue Flag/candidate Blue Flag beaches and SAC/SPA areas.

If introduced as proposed, this could seriously reduce access to many of the places anglers have fished for generations, including areas around Donabate, Portmarnock, Malahide Estuary, Rogerstown Estuary, Baldoyle Bay and Howth.

🎣 This isn’t just about today’s anglers. It’s about the next generation.

We have seen a huge increase in children and teenagers taking up fishing over the last few years. Angling gets young people outdoors, teaches them about nature and conservation, and gives them something positive to be involved in.

Taking away access to their local coastline is a massive step backwards.

We absolutely support protecting wildlife, sensitive habitats and the safety of beach users. But blanket bans are not the answer.

Seasonal restrictions, designated angling areas and restrictions during busy bathing hours could all address genuine concerns without effectively removing recreational angling from huge sections of the Fingal coastline.

⚠️ PLEASE DON’T JUST COMMENT ON THIS POST. MAKE A SUBMISSION.

If anglers don’t make their voices heard during the consultation process, we can’t complain afterwards when the opportunity has passed.

Whether you’re a sea angler, coarse angler, game angler, tackle shop, club member, parent of a young angler or simply believe in maintaining reasonable public access to our coastline, please take a few minutes and submit your objection.

📅 Submissions close: 4:30pm, 2 September 2026
