Coco coir (made from coconut husks) and peat moss (typically sphagnum peat) are both popular growing media, but coco coir offers several advantages over peat, especially for sustainable gardening and plant health:

🌱 Advantages of Coco Coir over Peat Moss
1. Sustainability

Coco coir is renewable: It's a byproduct of the coconut industry and regrows quickly.
Peat moss is non-renewable (short-term): Harvesting peat destroys ecosystems and takes centuries to regenerate.
2. Better Water Retention and Aeration

Coco coir retains water as well as or better than peat, while offering superior aeration.
It helps prevent overwatering and root rot due to better drainage.
3. pH Neutral to Slightly Alkaline

Coco coir has a pH of 5.5 to 6.8, which is closer to neutral and more suitable for most plants.
Peat moss is acidic (around 3.5 to 4.5), often requiring pH adjustment.
4. More Resilient Structure

Coco coir doesn’t compact easily and maintains its structure longer.
Peat can break down and compress over time, reducing air flow to roots.
5. Naturally Resistant to Pathogens

Coco coir is naturally resistant to some root diseases and fungal growth due to its lignin content.
6. Reusable

Coco coir can be washed and reused multiple times with proper care.
Peat moss breaks down after a single season and cannot be reused.
7. Easier to Rehydrate

Once dry, peat moss is hard to rewet, often becoming water-repellent.
