When the summer pots start looking a bit tired, chrysanthemums are very good at walking in like they own the place.

They bring rich colour from late summer into autumn, which makes them a handy choice for refreshing pots, doorways and outdoor displays without starting the whole thing from scratch.

Give them a bright spot and, most importantly, good drainage. They like moisture, but they will not thank you for sitting in soggy compost. Very few plants enjoy the paddling-pool lifestyle.

Worth knowing: potted chrysanthemums are best treated as seasonal colour unless you know the exact variety and hardiness. Some may come back, but not every one will reliably return next year.

Patio pot looking a bit miserable?

Before you blame yourself, the plant, the weather, or the mysterious forces of gardening, check the pot. Containers can struggle for very fixable reasons.

Five common culprits:

1. Blocked drainage
If water cannot get out, roots sit wet and start to suffer.

2. Too little compost
A tiny amount of compost dries out quickly and gives roots very little room to work with.

3. The wrong light
A sun-lover in shade will sulk. A shade-lover in hot afternoon sun may crisp around the edges.

4. Irregular watering
Containers dry out faster than borders, especially in warm or windy weather.

5. Plants with different needs
One plant wants moisture, another wants it dry. Someone is going to be unhappy. Usually all of them, because plants are dramatic like that.

Today’s quick check: lift the pot slightly. If it feels very light, it probably needs water. If it feels heavy and the compost is wet, check that the drainage holes are clear.

For help choosing better plants for your pots, bring us a photo of the spot and we’ll help you narrow it down.

"Low light" is one of the most misunderstood phrases in houseplant care. 🌿

It doesn't mean a dark room.

Low light still means natural daylight—just without direct sunshine. A north-facing room, a spot a few metres from the window, or a space shaded by neighbouring buildings can all be classed as low light.

The other thing to remember? Distance matters. A plant on a windowsill receives far more light than one tucked into the corner of the room.

Swipe through to see what really affects the light in your home, so you can choose plants that have the best chance of thriving.

A dark corner is still a dark corner. Plants are optimistic, not magical.

Not sure what your room counts as? Bring us a photo or pop into Easy Garden and we'll help you find a plant that's suited to your space.

The garden season is not packing up yet.

Rudbeckia brings that proper late-summer colour: bold, daisy-shaped flowers in sunny yellows, golds and warm tones. Very useful when the weather has forgotten its one job. 🌼

For best results, give rudbeckia a sunny spot. It will usually cope with light shade, but the more shade it gets, the fewer flowers you can expect. Plant in fertile soil that holds some moisture, and water well during dry spells, especially in containers.

Deadhead faded blooms to keep the display going, or leave some seedheads later for autumn structure.

Worth knowing: “rudbeckia” covers different species and cultivars. Some are short-lived, some are longer-lasting perennials, and mature height can vary a lot, so check the label before assuming it will behave itself politely at the front of the border.

Visit us in Spawell and we’ll help you choose one that suits your space.

Heather is not just one plant wearing three slightly different jumpers.

We have Calluna, Erica and Daboecia now in stock at Easy Garden, and each one brings something a little different to containers, borders and smaller Dublin gardens.

Calluna
The classic late-summer heather. Fine foliage, compact growth and a lovely choice for colour as summer starts thinking about packing up.

Erica
Often the one to choose if you want to stretch the season. Many types flower through cooler months, when the garden badly needs a bit of encouragement.

Daboecia
Also known as Irish heath, with larger bell-shaped flowers and a softer, looser look. Very charming. Knows it, probably.

Best tip: most heathers like a bright spot and free-draining soil. Many prefer acidic conditions, so if your soil is on the limey side, a container with ericaceous compost is usually the easier route.

Visit us in Spawell and we’ll help you pick the right type for your pot, border or “I just want something that still looks good in a few months” situation.

Mini cyclamen have made their entrance.

No, it is not autumn yet. They have simply arrived early and decided to be dramatic about it.

These neat little outdoor cyclamen are brilliant for adding colour to pots, baskets and doorstep displays when summer planting starts to look a bit tired. Give them a bright, sheltered spot outdoors and avoid letting them sit in soggy compost.

Visit us this weekend and pick a few for an easy colour lift. 🌸

Heading away for a few days? Your houseplants don't always need a full-scale rescue mission. 🌿

Before you pack, take a few minutes to give them the best chance while you're away:
• Water only the plants that actually need it.
• Move thirstier plants out of hot, sunny spots if appropriate.
• Empty standing water from saucers or decorative pots where it could cause problems.
• If someone is looking after them, leave simple instructions "a little" means different things to different people!

The exact care depends on the plants you have, so we'll tailor the final tips to the plants in the photos.

Save this checklist for your next trip, and follow along for more straightforward indoor plant advice throughout August.
