Read to your baby every day! Some people believe babies are too young to be read to … please ignore these people. Babies are never too young to be read to, and nursery rhymes are a great way to start. I promise you, your baby will react to your reading, and to the change in tone and rhythm of the way you normally speak - they will be fascinated, and will love hearing the same rhymes many times. Singing them is ever better.

These books are some of my favourite nursery rhyme books and any one of them would make a gorgeous gift to new parents and their babies. I will put a link in stories!

The ones I talk about are:

Read to Your Baby Every Day edited by , illustrated by

Nursery Rhymes, illustrated by Margaret Tarrant ()

Here We Go Around the Mulberry Bush by

I See the Moon and the Moon Sees Me, by , illustrated by .illustration

Over the Hills and Far Away, compiled by Elizabeth Hammill, containing work from 70 world-class illustrators including our own and

RELUCTANT READERS!! If it feels like your child can read, but isn’t - don’t try and force it! The best thing to do is expose them to books, all types of books, by either going into bookshops regularly and/or the library.

I’ve selected a few books that might entice a reluctant reader - ones that can be a stepping stone to enjoying longer chapter books.

However, if your 7/8/9 year old still enjoys picture books THAT’S OK!! There’s often a rush to get children away from picture books and on to what is seen as more “grown-up” books, but a lot of picture books are more sophisticated than you think, and it’s completely ok to encourage your child to keep reading them if that’s what they are drawn to. You could have one or more of these books I mentioned in the house too and if they pick them up, then great. If they don’t, you could read them to your child yourself, and keep trying with other books that might appeal to your child to read themselves. Some children only like to read non-fiction books with loads of pictures; we have tons of them in stock!

We are always happy to advise and have books for whatever stage your child is at.

The books I mention here are:

The 13 Storey Treehouse series by and illustrated by

Pablo and Splash by

Bear and Bird series by

Vicky and June by .toht, illustrated by

The Finger-Eater by

I’m back! Now that we’re closed on Mondays for a wee while I can do these again. So… READING ALOUD TO CHILDREN! One of the greatest joys of parenting, and so many benefits for the child too.

These are suggestions for when you feel your child is ready for a longer story and/or a chapter book - this will be different for every child (as usual I hate putting an age on books!). I had a longer video which instagram urged me to shorten 🙄 but I do want to get across that your child, like you, will have likes and dislikes when it comes to books, and that’s ok. If a book is not resonating with your child, just move on and pick another one. My kids are obviously very lucky in that we have hundreds of books at home - I don’t expect anyone to be buying hundreds of books, so use the library! Until you find the kind of books that are working.

The books I talk about here are:

- Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

- the Narnia series by CS Lewis

- anything by Dick King-Smith

- classics such as Stig of the Dump by Clive King

- The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

Any other suggestions of great read-alouds let me know!
