"ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THIS DREADFUL YEAR" - The Sunday Times

"A STUNNING PIECE OF WORK" RTÉ CULTURE

"A Ghost in the Throat" (written by Doireann Ní Ghríofa - our sister/sister-in-law/daughter/ depending on who is behind the counter!) has been receiving rave reviews and we couldn't be more proud!

Many of you will have come to Doireann's book launches and readings in Scéal Eile Books over the years - we are over the moon that her talent is now reaching such a wide audience, thank you so much for supporting her over the years.

We would love if you would consider supporting both Scéal Eile Books and Doireann by buying a copy of this "truly original read" (- The Sunday Independent) in our shop.

Not local? No problem! You can order a signed, first edition copy* from us over the phone on 065 6848648.

Thank you so much for your support, friends!

Since I shared news of my terminal diagnosis, the love & generosity you have shown to our little family bookshop has blown our hearts wide open ❤️
I'm usually a private person but posted about my diagnosis to give customers an explanation for myself & Pat's absence - we didn't expect the support of thousands, we didn't expect to be overwhelmed with love 😭❤️
For 13 years, I poured my energy, myself, my heart into the shop. I wished, hoped, worried, pulled and dragged the shop into the world. When I met my husband, he had to learn to love and work in the shop too (we came as a pair😬). We lived on so little so we could keep Scéal Eile Books alive. Owning a bookshop is not an easy thing, booksellers joke that it is a calling. But oh we have had many adventures. We have sold books to museums & galleries in New York, Amsterdam, Barcelona, to collectors all over the world, and we have sold Minecraft books to kids in exchange for their life savings, clutched in a sticky hand 😅
I had no idea that through all this, you were there, falling a little bit in love with Scéal Eile Books too ❤️
Thank you for showing me that the shop we built, my little dream, is so loved by you. In a world of retail giants, thank you for seeing us ❤️
Sorry if the messages, emails & letters you sent haven't been answered, or have just had automated replies, we really want you all to know that every message has been read, every one of them has touched us, there's just no time to reply right now. To the people who have offered to work, you are so kind. At present, it feels right for the shop to be run by family. But this may change. Again, thank you for such kindness as we stumble into our new stark reality ❤️
If you would to like to support us but aren't in Ennis, consider buying a gift voucher over the phone to be posted to your home ❤️
Love & light, Éibhleann

As news spread of how the Covid-19 pandemic would affect our lives, our little bookshop was hit with more awful news. Our co-owner Éibhleann's cancer had returned and she is now terminally ill at 36. Éibhleann (that's me!) opened Scéal Eile Books in 2006 with the help of my dad, and for the last 7 years I've run the shop with my husband Pat. You might also have met our 2 year old daughter Eilbhe behind the counter! We are so sad to say that we have to leave our beautiful shop, but hope you understand why. I have another, harder path to walk down now, I wish I could stay.
My parents have decided to open the shop when they can, starting from tomorrow (Monday) when they'll be open from 12ish until 4ish. Opening hours won't be what they were, I hope you all understand why. We will update our opening hours on social media when we can. Please visit and buy a book or two if you'd like to support us.
Thank you to everyone who has bought books from us over the years, or come to an event in the shop. Thanks for being part of our little dream.
