For many centuries, the Wren Boy tradition was practiced throughout Europe - now it is localized to a few areas of Celtic heritage. The strange parade of music and straw outfits occurs on the 26th of December.

The classic play 'Peter Pan' is also known as the 'Boy Who Would Not Grow Up'. True to that title, it is the only play whose royalties will continue in perpetuity.

As a gift in his will, J.M. Barrie donated all future proceeds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We are delighted to be launching Galway’s own Gordon D’Arcy’s magisterial new book ‘Birdstyle’, a beautifully published compendium of of 100 well-known Irish birds tomorrow, Friday 25th September at 6pm. The book blends the science of ornithology with stunning bird artistry and original poetry to produce a striking and unique tribute to Irish birds for the collector and the Nature-lover alike. The guest speaker is Eoin Warner, whose new Irish nature book ‘Through the Long Grass’ has just been published to great acclaim. All are welcome.

There are few Irish political figures more interesting than Noël Browne. As a child he would lose both parents to TB, however, he was lifted from poverty and proceeded to rapidly rise to success at a relatively young age.

From power struggles to healthcare schemes and clashes with the Catholic church, Noël Browne's political career would span more than 30 years. He would become a prominent figure of the Irish Left. He was known as a difficult colleague, but he was much liked by the public at large for his contributions to the Irish state and the eradication of TB.

We are delighted to be hosting our annual Culture Night event this Friday the 18th of September from 5.30 to 9.30pm. Our template is that anyone who lives in Galway and has published a book in the last 12 months reads from it for a strict 5 minutes. It is essentially a snapshot of our literary and cultural year and is invariably a varied and fascinating evening and all are welcome throughout the evening. As an added bonus, there will be cake!

In the first half of the 20th Century, some very famous ships were sunk. Whether by accident, mistake, force of nature or acts of war, iconic boats were destroyed.

The Lusitania, the Bismarck, the Arizona, the Indianapolis and possibly the most famous ship ever - the Titanic; are all names that end in disaster.

For most, the R.M.S. Leinster is not one of those ships. Unfortunately, it should be. Few know the events of the greatest loss of live in the Irish sea and Philip Lecane's excellently researched book does justice to that forgotten tragedy.

Malachy Sweeney's 'A Troubled Time' corrects that error by chronicling the events in County Donegal during the turbulent period that included the issue of Home Rule, the Easter Rising, the War of Independence, the Truce and the Treaty.
