If you regularly buy from websites outside the EU, you may notice some changes when your order arrives.
Since 1 July, purchases entering Ireland from outside the EU with a value under €150 are subject to a new customs charge.
Here’s what to be aware of:
- A €3 customs charge applies per unique item, plus VAT.
- Larger retailers may include this cost at checkout, so you’ll know the full price before paying.
- If the charge isn’t collected at checkout, your delivery company may collect it and an additional administration fee may apply.
- Customs charges are not refunded if you return an item.
- Be cautious of scam texts or emails asking you to pay customs fees — always check through official delivery channels.
For anyone trying to manage their household budget, these extra costs are a good reminder to look beyond the advertised price and consider the full cost of a purchase before buying.
Small changes in spending habits can make a difference over time.
