🎶 DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS? 🎶

With Nollaig – Kells Christmas Festival & Lights coming together, we’ve been looking forward a lot lately… but it’s also got us looking back. ❤️

Because while Nollaig might only run for one week, what we’d really love to see come from it is something that lasts much longer.

Community.

Kells has always been at its best when the town comes together.

And years ago, there was a lovely tradition here that some of you will remember very well…

On New Year’s Eve, people would gather outside the Credit Union, with the Kells Silver Band, and as midnight arrived, the town would ring in the New Year together with Auld Lang Syne. 🎺🥂

No massive production. No elaborate festival.

Just people coming into town, meeting neighbours, seeing familiar faces, and welcoming another year together.

There’s something fairly special about that.

And maybe, while we’re busy creating new traditions with Nollaig, we shouldn’t forget some of the old ones either.

So we have a question…

If we brought the old Kells New Year’s Eve gathering back, would you come? 👀

Auld Lang Syne.
The town gathered together again at midnight.

Maybe some traditions deserve another go. ❤️

🎄 RIGHT… HERE’S A SMALL TASTE OF NOLLAIG

First things first, Samhain gets November started properly from the 5th-8th of November this year!

Then once everyone has emersed themselves fully in the culture, fills their bellies with the gorgeous food & drink, Nollaig takes over from the 22nd to 29th November.

This isn’t the full itinerary yet, just a look at ,some of what we have lined up so far.

There’s a bit of everything in there, and in depth descriptions of each event will be announced over the coming weeks, so you’ll know exactly what’s happening, where it’s happening and what needs to be booked.

Tickets for the ticketed events will be going on sale shortly too.

And before anyone starts…

“Don’t start talking about Christmas now, it’s only September.”

Look love, it’s two months away. 😂
We do not have the luxury of waiting until the first week of December and hoping for the best.

A little bit of housekeeping as well.

Any money raised through ticket sales goes straight back into this year’s Christmas lights and the new Nollaig Festival.

There’s no profit pot sitting somewhere. This is being organised by volunteers who are trying to build something good for the town and, hopefully, something that can keep growing year after year.

Our GoFundMe will be still running as well for anyone who would like to support just the lights directly.

And if money isn’t your thing, hands are just as useful.

We’ll also have a volunteer sign up form on the website for anyone who can give a hand during the festival week.

When the website is eventually fit for public consumption, obviously. 😂

And because the whole point of this festival is community, if you’re a local business, club, group or organisation and you’d like to run something during Nollaig week, give us a shout.

If it works with the programme, we can add it in.

The more people around the town involved, the better the week will be.

And yes, before anyone says it…

the website is not ready yet.

Please do not go testing it like Revenue on deadline day. 😂
We are still building it.

For now, have a nosey at what’s coming and save the dates.

Hinterland kicks off the festival season.
Samhain keeps it going.
Nollaig finishes the year off.

If we all keep backing these events and supporting each other, Kells really can become a proper festival town that people travel to.

And that only happens if we all get behind it.

But apparently Christmas diaries are already filling up, so we better get our skates on.

No, we’re not emotionally ready either. 😂

QUIZ NIGHT IS COMING 👀🧠🎄

Friday 25th September we’re taking over downstairs in O’Connors Bar, Farrell Street for a proper table quiz in aid of Kells Christmas Lights and the Nollaig Festival.

And this one is very kindly supported by the amazing Local Heroes ❤️

Teams of 4
Doors open at 8pm

There’ll be a full night of questions, a raffle, great prizes, tea and grub, and of course the bar is there for anyone who discovers halfway through round three that their general knowledge improves significantly with a pint. 😂

We’ve also got some brilliant raffle prizes up for grabs, so even if your quiz team has the combined intelligence of a damp tea towel, all is not lost.

Every euro raised goes back into the Christmas lights and this year’s Nollaig Festival, so get the gang together and book your table.

Before we start bombarding ye with Our New Nollaig Festival... 🎄😂

There’s another brilliant festival happening in Kells first.

Samhain Festival Kells is back from the 5th to the 8th of November, with four days of food, drink, culture, family events and plenty happening around the town.

There’ll be everything from food and drink experiences and children’s workshops to the brilliant Sheridan’s Irish Food Fair and the Samhain Long Table Supper. Basically, if you like good food, a bit of craic and an excuse to head into Kells for the weekend, you’re fairly well covered. 😄

We know ourselves just how much work goes on behind the scenes to get these things off the ground. Committees, volunteers, phone calls, emails, meetings, more meetings about the meetings... and somebody inevitably asking a question that was answered three messages ago. 😂

So from everyone involved with Nollaig, Kells Christmas Festival & Lights, we want to wish the Samhain team the very best for this year’s festival.

Kells is at its best when there’s something happening, people are coming into town and local businesses are getting the support they deserve.

So before we start talking Christmas, get out and support Samhain. 🎃🍴

🌿 IMPORTANT UPDATE – HEADFORT CINEMA EVENTS 🌿

After much discussion, we've made the difficult decision to postpone both our Family Cinema Day and Secret Garden Cinema, which were due to take place on Saturday 15th August.

With the current weather forecast remaining uncertain for next week, we don't feel it's fair to ask people to commit to an event that relies so heavily on the atmosphere of a summer's day and evening.

This wasn't an easy decision, but we'd much rather postpone than risk disappointing everyone.

For anyone who has already purchased tickets, full refunds will be arranged. We'll be in touch with everyone individually over the coming days with details.

We'd like to sincerely thank the Headfort Arms, Happy Haven soft play hire , Karen Ball Events, and everyone who helped plan and support these events. Your generosity and enthusiasm never go unnoticed.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who shared our posts, bought tickets, and supported the Nollaig Festival. Community support like yours is what allows us to keep planning new ideas and raising funds for the Kells Christmas Lights.

This may be one event we couldn't make happen, but we're already looking ahead to the next one... and, of course, to bringing a magical Christmas to Kells once again. 🎄✨

Well... we survived our first ever Nollaig Summer Event! 😂🎄🌺

And what a night it was.

To everyone who bought a ticket, came along, threw on a Hawaiian shirt, had a burger, danced away, bought raffle tickets, or simply came up to wish us well... thank you.

Honestly, we weren't quite sure what to expect for our very first event, but the support from the people of Kells was incredible.

A huge thank you to Jacks Bar Restaurant Garden and all of their management and staff. They gave us the venue, supplied the BBQ, sponsored our brilliant walk-around magician, Andrew Lavery, and looked after everyone all evening. They really got behind what we're trying to build.

We also want to say a huge thank you to Karen from Karen Ball Events and Paul McGuinness from Your Wedding DJ.ie, who generously gave up their own time to help us behind the scenes with the set-up. Like any event, there's a lot that people don't see before the first guest arrives, and we really appreciated you both rolling up your sleeves and helping make it all happen.

One thing that genuinely caught us by surprise was the number of people who weren't even at the event but still dropped money into the donation buckets. Nobody had to do that, but they did. That's community. That's Kells. ❤️

Now... was everything absolutely perfect?

Probably not.

But for our very first event, we're incredibly proud of what was achieved by a group of volunteers who simply want to bring a bit of life back into the town and create something everyone can enjoy.

We'll learn something from every event, tweak things as we go, and each one will get a little bigger, a little smoother and a little better. So stick with us... we're only getting started.

Finally, we'd like to thank the weather. It threatened us all week, then decided to behave itself for one evening. Fair play. 😂🌤️

We've lots more planned over the coming months. Some nostalgic, some festive, some completely different... but every single one is about bringing our community together while helping fund the future of Christmas in Kells.

🚨 Public Service Announcement 🚨

To everyone with tickets tonight...

DO NOT look up.

That grey sky means absolutely nada.

This is Ireland. If we cancelled plans every time the sky looked like that, we'd all still be waiting to have our First Holy Communion.

And before anyone starts forwarding screenshots from five different weather apps... relax. The forecast isn't looking half as bad as the sky is trying to make out. Even the weather can't seem to make its mind up today, which is the most Irish thing about it. 😂

The music is ready.
The BBQ is ready.
The pints are ready.
The craic is definitely ready.

So stop checking the weather every seven minutes.... like we are 😂 We're treating it like every other Irish summer's day... carry on! ☀️🌦️
