Such a lovely surprise to receive a visit from these lovely ladies last week, modelling vintage Studio Donegal. These ponchos are from the very early days of Studio Donegal, circa 1980. The designs were the creation of the late Peter Harvey, who had travelled extensively in South America and was influenced by the Inca textiles and culture. Slow and intense work, they were a bid to stand out from machine woven designs, pieces that were impossible to make on mechanical looms, giving Studio Donegal a distinct look of its own. The bag was almost certainly sewn by local woman, the late Betty Murray, who worked from home making these bags and other items for us. The ponchos likewise were possibly sewn by her.

Tristan and Anne headed ‘down the country’ for a little break last week and while walking around Kilkenny city we noticed the lovely staff a new window display, needless to say we heartily approve of the sunflower! 🌻

With all the recent talk about what is really Made in Ireland, especially in the textile industry, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight that all of our products are made here in Kilcar, Co Donegal, Ireland. As was the original aim of Studio Donegal, we are continuing the traditional craft of hand weaving, which was the only method of producing Donegal tweed prior to the introduction of mechanical weaving in the 1960’s. We remain dedicated to preserving the craft and to continue to make our garments, hats, scarves, cushion covers and our small gift items at home here in the mill in Kilcar. Our products continue to be slow made, and as sustainably made as possible. We use 100% wool, in the form of yarn spun by our neighbours here in Kilcar, Donegal Yarns. We use biodegradable items such as corozo nut, leather and horn buttons to finish our garments. We do not change the style of our garments according to fashion trends, instead producing a permanent, timeless collection that will last through the years. We continue to make beautiful, colourful and creative designs in our throws and cushions, using traditional, hand made methods. We are always saddened to see consumers being duped into spending their money on ‘faux’ Irish products and would love to see much stricter standards for what can be called made in Ireland
