What does quality really mean anymore?

In a world of fast fashion and throwaway pieces, we think it's worth pausing on what a truly well-made thing actually takes.

Our Connemara Handloomed Scarves start with wool sourced from Cushendale Woollen Mills and Donegal Yarns, two of Ireland's most respected mills, long before it ever reaches our loom here in Leenane. From there, every scarf is woven by hand, thread by thread, colour by colour, by hands that have spent years learning the craft. No shortcuts, no mass production, just time, skill and Irish wool, done properly.

The result is a piece built to be worn for years, not seasons, in six colours from Burnt Orange to Midnight. That's what quality looks like to us.

Our handloomed blankets come in a range of shades pulled straight from the Connemara landscape — marine, blackgrain, scarlet, seaweed and mist.

From my camera roll

Killary Fjord on a still night, not a ripple in sight.

Killary sits right on my doorstep, here in Leenaun, and it never stops stopping me in my tracks.

To everyone who's joined us here recently, céad míle fáilte ☘️ We're delighted to have you.

I recorded this video last year, and it tells the story of when my Mum and Dad, Michael and Kathleen O'Toole, first opened the doors of the Sheep & Wool Centre here in Leenane back in 1992. It was officially opened by the wonderful Mary Robinson, past President of Ireland, and I remember how proud my mother was that day. She was a Mayo woman herself, and even though we're based here in Galway, having the centre opened by a fellow Mayo woman meant the world to her.

Today, we're just as committed to what they started. My father spent his career as an agricultural scientist specialising in sheep, and he poured that knowledge, and his love of this land and its people, into building somewhere that could preserve and share Connemara's wool traditions. Now I'm proud to carry that on as a family business.

Our story is also part of a much older one. Wool has shaped life in Leenane since the late 1880s, when the Congested Districts Board revived weaving here, with workshops at the Leenane Hotel run by its owner, Robert McKeown, producing hand-woven tweeds sold both at home and abroad. Even after that scheme ended, local weavers kept the craft alive. By the 1950s, wool merchant John M. Joyce was buying the finest fleece from farmers along the west coast, running a busy Wool Store on the Westport Road, just across from his family home, Bayview House, both still remembered fondly around here today.

At the centre, we bring all of that history back to life. The looms still clatter, the spinning wheels still hum, and visitors get to see, first-hand, techniques that are as sustainable now as they ever were. We hope everyone who walks through our door leaves with a real feel for the connection between sheep, wool and the people of Connemara, a connection that shaped our past and still warms our present.

A calm mind is your superpower. 💚

Have you heard of the Connemara Worry Stone? It's a small ritual that's been used in Ireland for generations — smooth, palm-sized marble with a hollow shaped just for your thumb.

When you rub the stone, it's said to hold your worry, giving you a chance to find a bit of calm and some relief from whatever's weighing on you. No batteries, no app — just a stone small enough for your pocket, there for the school run, the desk at 4pm, or the last few minutes before sleep.

Ours is genuine Connemara Marble, quietly known as the Gemstone of Ireland. Because it comes straight from the ground, no two stones are ever quite the same.

When you shop the stone on our website it comes with a classic Irish poem and approach to worries — perfect to make you, or a loved one, smile, and to keep those worries in perspective. Swipe through to read it. 👉

Why worry, after all? Sometimes a small stone and an old bit of wisdom is enough.

Share with a friend who needs to hear this today. 💚
