Go raibh míle maith agaibh to everyone who joined us this afternoon as we celebrated another great year of September Sessions! ☘️🎶

There was an extraordinary recording of the late Tom O’Malley whose recollection of the first time the radio came to Doughmakeon had us fascinated! It was made even more special by the inclusion of tunes and pictures from the O’Malley family collection. A huge thank you to Emer Mayock and Richie Piggott for sharing this wonderful archive with us! 📻❤️🇮🇪

The music continued with takented local musicians livening up the Pop-Up Gaeltacht 🕺☘️

Thank you to everyone, roll on next September!
For more info on Tom O’Malley’s incredible life from Doughmakeon to Chicago you can visit www.richiepiggot.com and check out his book ‘Cry of a People Gone’. 📚

As part of the SEPTEMBER SESSIONS 2026 and presented by MUSIC OF MAYO 🎶
When the Radio Came to Doughmakeon is a special listening event exploring memory, storytelling and local history.
Traditional musician Emer Mayock shares a recording of the Kate Tom O’Malley(1932-2021), a native of Doughmakeon, near Louisburgh, as he recalls the arrival of the first radio in his village and the impact it had on the people and the community around him.
Through Tom’s own voice and storytelling we are offered a glimpse into a very different world, a time when the arrival of a radio could transform how a small rural community encountered news, music and the wider world.
Join us at Books at One to hear Tom’s story and to reflect on the importance of oral history, storytelling and the memories that connect us to a place, as well as how much our ways of listening and communicating have changed.

Thank you to everyone who came yesterday to the opening of Jane K. Williams´s art exhibition "Return to remembering".
It was a lovely evening with a talk by Elisabeth Salter (farmer and director of 'creativity climate community') and Ian Davidson (poet and critic) as well as music by guitarist Brian Parsons.
What a great night 🙂
