Family Stories from Cork History, by Michael Christopher Deane

This book traces the stories of nine families who at different stages through history achieved much prominence in Cork. The stories extend from the War of Independence to World War 1 to Cromwell, the Battle of Kinsale and further back in time to the ancient Irish clans. The family stories from the War of Independence include the burning of a number of Big Houses. There are multiple stories of family scandals, including maritial infedelity with profound family consequences, as well as major frauds in both mining and banking. While most of the families are natives of Cork, two are of Kerry origin who later became domiciled in Cork.

Overall, the stories provide revealing snapshot of Irish family history through the generations. These stories ar epublished now as there is a clear danger that otherwise some would recede into the mists of time and soon be lost forever.

Michael Christopher Keane is a retired lecturer from University College Cork. His previous publications include ‘From Laois to Kerry’, ‘The Crosbies of Cork, Kerry, Laois and Leinster’, and ‘The Earls of Castlehaven Lord Audleys of Cork and Kildare’

Hazel Mulqueen, originally from Limerick and now living in Dublin, has written a gorgeous new book for children perfect for Halloween! Irish culture is very important to Hazel and she uses this as a central theme in the book. In recent years, County Kerry has found a special place in her heart, and the beauty of the landscape and the communitys celebration of Halloween inspired her to write 'Howl at Halloween' 🎃

'Scairt na Samhna' is an Irish translation of the same book, and this has been shortlisted for the prestigious Gradam de Bhaldraithe award! Awarded by An tOireachtas, this recognises the best book translated into Irish!

Both books available now in Philip's Bookshop 👻🎃🧙‍♀️🧙
