September beginning, again

my september walks along our Leitrim hedgerows laneways returns me this patch of land along a connecting minor road towards home. what brings me back here is the glow of purple flowers heads of the devils bit scabious and the lives that live within this patch of land. what brings me back here each September is hope, this tiny patch of hope, that appears and disappears without noise, unnoticed by most who pass it by, but for me it is a beacon at the end of summer every year. this morning they are full of light and pointing me towards something extra special in their view, see third photo.

come visit the last weekend of the Botanical Art Expo Claregalway Castle. this wonderful exhibition curated by Jane Stark - botanical artist showcases a collection of amazing contemporary botanical works on paper by leading botanical artists from all over ireland ISBA the exhibition runs alongside this year’s Autumn Plant Fair which is on at Claregalway Castle this Sunday, 6th September 2026. This much-loved annual event brings together some of Ireland’s leading specialist nurseries, growers and artisans in the stunning surroundings of one of Galway’s most historic landmarks.

My drawing of cardamine hirsuta - hairy bittercress mother plant before seed dispersal, will be on show together with two of my other drawings and a collection of my cards, prints and textiles at the event.

The gifts of natures larder, where the wild things live and grow.

Our September hedgerows are at their peak and now heavy with ripening fruits of autumn, berries, hips and haws, blackberries, hazelnuts, elderberries, snowberries and much much more. These fruits , seeds and berries provide essential food sources and energy supply for our birds and mammals. Many of our swallows, swift and house Martins are still with us in ireland getting ready to migrate for the wonder and our hedgerows provide them with the food they need for their journey.

This morning I met several gold crests, swallows and dunno is busy gathering insects from the patch of devils bit and bush vetch on our lane. The layering within our hedgerows is vital for wildlife.

Hedgerows are our heritage and for over a decade I’ve been drawing solely from the hedgerows and the meadows of my home here in Leitrim. Our biodiversity is our heritage.

This week is National Hedgerow Week in Ireland. Hedgerow week is a partnership between the The Heritage Council and Teagasc you can visit their pages to find out what events are happening to raise awareness of the need to care for our hedgerows. Hedgerows Ireland

A great light has gone out and such a time to loose him.
RIP to the gentle powerhouse Wendell Berry, farmer, poet and environmentalist. His work about community, care, love and loss has touched my heart for many years. Through his gentle activism and acts of care for the planet and how we can create a deeper connection with each other.

is haunted

It's now season, devil's-bit scabious, a flowering plant of the honeysuckle family here, along with common vetch it's flowering in our fields, verges and bogs at the moment. I adore this native wildplan as it plays a vital role in biodiversity late summer for our pollinators and is the main food plant for our marsh fritillary butterflies.

thinking about this thoughtful, collaborative project with artist Louisa Crispin

focusing on a small patch of meadow section as a I observed during the heatwave on 2021 making miniature studies of the wildplanrs and visiting pollinators, meadow browns, ringlets, small and large cabbage butterflies, small moths, carder and bumblebees on a folded paper strip with Louisa's graphite marks. a space to express what I saw happening within this square metre of the landscape through monoprinting, textural markmaking, natural inks and watercolour studies to make a snapshot of the life and light projected at sunset from a field in leitrim in early august.
