Want to stop your citrus tree from dropping its fruit or turning yellow? 🍋
Citrus trees are notorious “drama queens,” but most of their problems come down to a few surprising botanical secrets. Here are 5 facts that every citrus owner needs to save for later:
🍋 1. Color is a Lie: Unlike most fruits, the peel color of a citrus isn’t a reliable indicator of ripeness. Citrus starts green due to chlorophyll; they only turn orange or yellow when temperatures drop. If you live in a warm climate, your lemon might stay green but be perfectly sweet and juicy inside!
🍊 2. The “Heavier is Better” Rule: Since you can’t trust the color, trust the weight. The heavier the fruit feels in your hand, the more juice it contains.🍋🟩 3. Hand-Pollinate for Indoor Success: Growing your tree indoors? Even if it’s “self-pollinating,” a lack of wind and bees means the pollen can’t move. Use a small paintbrush to gently brush the center of the flowers to ensure you actually get fruit!🍋 4. Avoid “Soggy Feet”: More citrus trees are killed by overwatering than underwatering. They love moisture but hate standing water. Always use “pot feet” or rocks to raise your pot off its saucer so the roots never sit in drained water.🍊 5. Sun Exposure = Sweetness: The fruit’s location on the tree changes its flavor. Fruit on the top and south side of the tree gets more sun, which increases the sugar content. If you want the sweetest orange, pick it from the top!
