French Louis XV Mahogany Commode with Antique Reclaimed Marble Top, Circa 1780–1800

An exceptional French Louis XV mahogany five-drawer commode dating from the late eighteenth century, circa 1780–1800. Rich in character and craftsmanship, the chest features elegant brass drawer mouldings, original brass drop handles, and finely reeded corner plaques.

The commode is beautifully proportioned, standing on reeded turned corner pillars that lead to tapering turned legs, each terminating in brass sabot feet. The warm mahogany patina and refined detailing exemplify the quality associated with French furniture of this period.

Its most intriguing feature is the white marble top, which was crafted from a reclaimed tombstone or church memorial plaque dating more than a century earlier than the chest itself. This remarkable example of early recycling adds a unique layer of history and provenance, making the piece not only a fine example of Louis XV design but also a fascinating conversation piece. Superb quality early 19th century flame mahogany ladies dressing table with marble top and mirror back.

An unusual and very elegant piece, made in beautifully figured flame mahogany with a rich dark patina. The white marble top sits above one long frieze drawer, supported by twin reeded pillars leading to a finely carved splayed base, joined by a shaped turned stretcher.

The impressive mirror back is held within beautifully curved supports, finished with decorative brass finials.

A lovely piece of furniture with wonderful detail throughout — perfect as a dressing table, but equally attractive as a hall or console table where the mirror can really make an impact. (1082A)

19th Century French Kingwood & Rosewood Marquetry Sideboard

A magnificent and highly decorative example of 19th century French antique sideboard /side cabinet beautifully crafted in kingwood and rosewood and richly embellished with floral marquetry.

The timber is enhanced by intricate floral marquetry panels, geometric crossbanding and contrasting veneers, creating a wonderfully façade.
The two doors are centred by striking floral marquetry panels, complemented by matching marquetry decoration to the drawers above. The piece is further enriched with an impressive array of high-quality gilt-brass mounts, engraved mouldings, escutcheons and decorative corner mounts.

Its elegant, canted corners and shaped lower frieze add to the fine proportions, while the beautifully veined white marble top provides a wonderful contrast to the rich, warm tones of the timber. (1079C)
