Shanagarry Potters & Stephen Pearce Pottery Keepers Of Cultural
Founded on a core appreciation of handmade craftsmanship and enduring quality In 1963 Stephen travelled overseas.

Stephen began his apprenticeship under his father Philip Pearce in 1962, when he helped develop the Shanagarry range of earthenware. Today that striking and distinctive black and white design is recognised around the world and demand for it has increased consistently over the years since it was first produced. He first broadened his knowledge and experience working under Ray Finch and Sid Tustin a

t Winchcombe Pottery in England where he also worked with Michael Casson. Then to France where he worked for Gwyn Hansen. In 1966 he won a year-long scholarship to study in Japan under master potter Kanhesaige Toyo. The following year Stephen hitched back through Asia and Europe to London where he started making his own pottery. He also became involved in the thriving London music scene. In 1971 he returned to Cork and resumed working with his father while formulating plans for his own pottery. Construction began in 1973. Stephen’s simple and functional design philosophy soon led to the creation of his Traditional range of earthenware in terracotta and white. The simplicity and beauty of these pieces quickly earned them critical acclaim as design classics which have remained in style and demand ever since.

This lovely family visited us on their culinary tour of East Cork and fell for our hand-thrown "Happy Birthday" plate — so much so they're gifting one to each of their children to pass down through the generations to come.
Made by hand in Shanagarry, to kept for a lifetime.

Lovely to see our pottery being used in Breda Keohane’s arrangement at the recent AOIFA - Association of Irish Floral Artists competitions. Well done Breda - we love how you’ve made it all look so simple and natural. Congratulations to all the winners and competitors. Keep up the beautiful work of flower arranging.

Here are photos of some of the Ballymaloe Cookery School students that recently took part in a Pottery Experience Event here at the pottery as well as some of the pots they produced. We had two groups on seperate evenings but the display of pots made is a combination from both groups. There was 8 attendees in each group and they had a lot of fun making the pots under Ron's guidance. We were very impressed with their level of skill and they were thrilled with the finished goods which are gorgeous momento's of their time spent in Shanagarry whilst participating in the 12 Week Certificate Course. If you are interested in our Pottery Experience events please PM us and we will be happy to give any further information required.

We just love these Ballycotton plates and Flared Mugs. We have a variety of Ballycotton plates and mugs in both our Classic range and our Atlantic Wave range. They make beautiful gifts and are especially popular with Irish people living abroad and people on holidays here from abroad.
