Plaque to remember brothers who died in WWI

A Blue Plaque was unveiled this morning in Waterford city to remember four brothers from Phillips Street who died in the First World War.

Six of the Collins brothers went off to fight. Four died in Flanders and at the Somme. The fifth was missing presumed dead, only to be found badly injured and repatriated after the war.

The family’s sacrifice was remembered in a special mass in Ballybricken before 200 people fell behind a march led by a colour party from the Irish Defence Forces and the Royal British Legion to the site of the plaque on Phillip Street.

Fine Gael TD John Deasy unveiled the memorial. He told those gathered that over 11 hundred men from Waterford lost their lives in the war.

The Waterford TD said he feels it is only in recent years that proper respect is being paid to those who lost their lives fighting with the British Army in the Great War."
